Default serious technical problem

greetings gentlemen

last year i had an ATI RADEON XT1600XT graphics card and 1GB RAM. I upgraded it to NVIDIA GeForce 8600GTS and 4 GB RAM. Unfortunately my silent hunter 3 won't start anymore with new hardware?!?
It's all good from the start to the loading bar. When loading bar finishes, i should be seeing main screen but all i see is brown/grey screen and mouse cursor leaving trial on it. I thought maybe applying GWX 2.0 on clean version of SH3 would help, but it's the same.
I CAN'T PLAY MY FAVOURITE GAME !!!!!!!

Sorry you're having problems

How does the system perform with other games? That might give us a clue.

The cursor leaving a "trail" sounds as though something in the video chain is maxed out and can't cope with what it's being asked to do.

Did you re-install the peripherals ( Windows Media etc ) which came with the game

Have you also checked the resolution settings of a) your new video card b) your monitor / screen? If you're running a video card at a higher resolution than your screen can handle you will have major problems.

Try the lowest possible settings for everything ( resolution, in game video options etc) and see if that runs OK. If it does, your way up a step at a time until it falls over. Then go one step back.

Good luck.

von manteuffel,

thank you for your reply to my cry for help. I am not a pc wizzard and i have to say i don't know where to start making changes to resolution and such...

all games run smoothly - the latest such as World in Conlflict or Crysis run perfectly well. I have over 30 titles in my collection and none of them give me headache...

the only title i have problems with is SH3; after installation the program performs system check to see if my machine can run it and i pass all in flying colours ( on recommended steiings ) so i don't see the reason for it to happen...

My previous graphics card was weaker, ATI Radeon X1600XT, 256MB. Now I use geForce 8600GTS, 512MB.

What could be the reason of this, please help. none of my PC's settings were changed after replacing the graphics card and RAM thingy-thing-things

I'd appreciate your help. A lot.

OK, let's leave resolution settings for now. Three things to do first:

1. Totally uninstall SH3 - use Uninstall/Change programs from your Control Panel and delete the SH3 files in your My Documents folder.

You can also run a search ( all files and folders ) for SH3 and delete any files you find. If you've downloaded any mods, they're safe to leave, but put them in a separate folder well away from your program files.

Your aim is to re-start totally clean. So if you have a registry cleaner, run it after uninstalling SH3 and deleting any associated files.

2, Check that you have the very latest DirectX drivers installed. You can download the latest ones from the Microsoft website. Download and install them anyway - You won't do any harm.

3. Check that you have the very latest drivers for your new nVidia card. Go to the nVidia website and check. Just to be safe download and install the latest driver for your card from there.

Install SH3 - Just the out-of-the box game - no patche; no mods. Don't install either SH3 Comander, or JSGME yet.

Check that the system check the game performs after it's installed is OK

Try to run SH3 again. If we can get the vanilla unpatched and unmodded game to run OK we're winning.

This might might seem like a long process, but we have to start with the very basics - vanilla install DirectX and video drivers.

Please let me know how things go.

Fingers crossed.

Ditch the December 2007 Nvidea VIDEO DRIVERS

Install an earlier set of drivers

The Nov Dec 2007 driver upgrades were not to good for running SH3

I agree 100% with the above advice, little by little is the correct way to go about correcting the problem,

Removing SH3 with the add ons can be a pain in the neck as i know only to well.
A SEARCH FOR IS A MUST when trying to remove all.

gentlemen

thank you for all replies, i am thrilled to discover someone actually cares about random people having technical problems. Thanks for all your advice.

i performed actions as suggested by Manteuffel. Uninstalled both GWX and SH3, removed all SH3 related files, downloaded registry cleaner and cleaned registry. I went one step ahead and scanned my hard drives for viruses, performed disc cleaning and maintenance including disc defragmentation, downloaded the latest from DirectX, installed the game, patched it to v1.4 and started it.

No changes. I'm about to uninstall all Nvidia drivers and install older ones from their website, upgrading month by month until it works. If it won't, I decided to perform C:/format and reinstall system with everything else.

Once again thank you all for help. Hopefully I'll be able to update you this very evening on things and such.

Thx guys
schwarzes_dreizehn

PS - i know i could be slightly out of line for "copy and paste" business, lol, i thought it might be okay to submit all the info pc wizz would require to identify the problem, lol. Sorry anyway although now i'm a record breaker! Yay!
