Default Wheres The Big Action?

Wheres the good stuff? Im in Career mode, on about my fifth patrol. I get these messages about battle near midway, or the coral sea, but can never find them or Im too far away on my own mission.

I havent seen anything bigger than a large merchant and the warships are all small destroyer types.

As well Ive gotten bored and decided to attack a Jap dock on two occasions. Both occasions I was met with no resistance on the surface from the ground or docked ships. Good for tonnage but not good for fun.

The only real action seems to be a chance encounter with a convoy, or more likely a whole bunch of planes for my anti aircraft gun.

Am I doing something wrong?

Are you using the stock game? Cos I think the stock campaign leyers are screwy. You could try installing a mod or two. Trigger Maru is good nay outstanding , you might try the Run Silent Run Deep mod this alters the campaign layers in an attempt to make the game more realistic enemy shipping wise.

When using Run Silent Run Deep(RSRD), lurker has edited the campaign layers so that you can run into the enemy task forces.
As an example, after installing RSRD I ran into the Pearl Harbor Strike Force on its way back to Japan, and the Strike Force heading into Midway.

Default on the other hand...

What he's complaining about is not enough action and both RSRD and TM make targets much more sparse, as we are looking for a realistic outcome. It's way too easy to come back with 50,000 tons in the stock game.

This guy is complaining about the scarcity of targets. I'd be willing to say that aside from a future arcade mode mod it isn't going to happen here.

I'm still using the stock game, and have had plenty of action. I get tons of convoy and task force updates, most are too far. But some I can try to predict where they will be in the future using ruler etc and get there in time, and they are loaded. At first, I went after the larger convoys, but I found smaller convoys have less merchants, but they are much bigger vessels.

After I do my 48 hrs in my patrol zone, I'll go into the shipping lanes illustrated in the map that came with the game. That zone south of Japan, east of the East China Sea has been a gold mine. Cruising through there for a while I come across patrols and ships right and left, many with escorts. And taks forces show up regularly in that area it seems, doesn't get much funner than those.

Can't say enough about RSRD with either RFB or TMO. I play a lot; too much probably; in four careers I have sunk:

3 CV's, 1 BB, one CL, a Seaplane Tender and numerous DD's, subchasers and one Merchant Cruiser. On top of the intelligence intercepts that are set up for you, there are random appearances of TF's.

Cruise the coast off Japan (say 40-50 NM) and you'll see PLENTY of stuff, no matter what version you are running.

I pretty much ignore my patrol zone orders (just get them out of the way then don't report in) and then track the nearest shipping lane on a 2/3 speed zig zag course all the way back to Nihon.

I don't like task forces-too many DD's! That's what the USN Fast Carrier Task Forces are for-my job is to sink merchants and bring the ship home safely.

Not enough action... my eye... on one of the later patrols I ran into more action than I cared for.... it is quite nice to be assigned to picket duty during the invasion of Saipan and Guam... it is also very nice to get regular updates on enemy task forces.... but positioning oneself in pitch dark night on a taskforce filling up half of my radar screen, causing the sonar to go haywire and going to periscope depth only to find myself in the crossing point of two of those taskforces was a tad too much. At least I sunk two Takao Cruisers... couldn't see much else.

Oh yes... that was RFB with RSRD
