Deck Guns vs U-boat

I was just curious on just how many Deck gun hits U-boat could take in rl, ive been tweaking gun damage and have it set so one well placed hit will make diving a one way trip to the bottom. just wondering if thats realistic or not. thanks

Well being in the Australian Army [Infantry]; I've seen a fair few 105mm rounds do some totally evil damage to vehicles, armour plates, hill sides, trees & targets [various].

I don't think anyone would have seen what a deck gun could do to a U-Boat simply because I don't think none of us were in WWII; but in saying that there are a few Navy boys/girls in these forum that may have witnessed deck guns in action against some sort of surface vessel.

I will say this from a Infantry soldiers point of view; I would dread to be the person on the receiving end of a 105mm projectile or a full barrage fire mission or the main target of a convoy with a few destroyers locking onto your small U-Boat.

If I was a betting man I would have a guess that if you received a direct hit from a 105mm your days as a U-Boat crew member would be over either as a POW or in a deep ocean grave.

I would love to hear from ex serving or serving Naval members about their experiences about this subject

And by the way "Bilgerat" welcome to SuBsIm there are heaps of good and knowledgeable people hear and are most willing to help any which way they can.

Hi,

the Submarine pressurehull was made for high pressure and to realize this you need more elastic steel.
This kind of steel is to weak to be shootable.
So every Sub is very weak against hi speed Bullits and every kind of shells.
In WW II many Subs was wrecked by Machineguns from planes and you know that machineguns from planes only got small shells.

In my eyes every WW2-Sub got lost when they was hit by some 105 mm shells.
Maybe one lucky shoot to the right place like the batterystation will bring the boat to the end.

One shot in real life might not be enough to sink the boat; HOWEVER, one hole in the pressure hull means that it is no longer a submarine. After that, how many more can you absorb.

Exchanging gunfire with any ship designed to float is a bad idea, especially from a ship that's designed to sink.

In fact, even a couple of dozen hits from an oerlikon or a bofors was usually enough to wioe out any bridge and deck crew as well as hole the boat sufficiently to cause flooding

The problem is not the hole in the pressure hull.
If an big granade like the 105 mm ore an 120 mm explode in your batteryroom many cells goes to hell with a lot of chlorgas.

Unfortionally chlorgas isnt breathable and without elektrikpower you cant dive and the destroyer come nearer and nearer to the to the boat.
Thats the end.

Remember that every big bullit walk through the hull and explode behind the hull in the boat and there the shell destroys the important structures like batterys, pumps and pipelines, ventiles and so on !

Thats the reason why Subs have to dive when they stay under fire.
One hit could be the last.

At Pearl Harbour one japanese Sub was hit by one bullit from an Clemson into the "Turm" and it sunk.
