Default Deck gun and AA shells

Is it possible to down a plane with the deck gun and Anti-Aricraft shells? I've tried dozen times, but never hit.

Maybe it's better to stick with the AA machine guns.

I've never made it far enough into the war to even be assigned AA shells for the deck gun. I don't think it's worth the effort, though.

I've heard it's possible by luck to shoot down a plane with the deck gun. I prefer the dual barrel AA and go for the sure kill.
