Default U-boat Emblem

Ahoy Kaleuns!

After five patrols I've earned the right to have an emblem painted onto U-47's conning tower. I looked through all the many emblems that GWX so generously offers, but none seemed to really capture the deadly intent with which I prowl the deep.

So for your perusal I offer my own humble creation....

I call it "Neptune's Fist".

I drew this by hand with a Sharpie marker, scanned it, and then cleaned it up with Paint Shop Pro 10 before converting it to a 256x256 .tga file with the proper background transparency. It took me a good while to do the editing as I'm still not very comfortable or adept with digital artwork. I still prefer the old-fashioned pencil-to-paper or brush-on-canvas methods that I've used all my life.

The pic posted here is the .jpg without transparency due to tinypic.com not liking the .tga format. I had to pick an image host as I was making this post so if anyone knows of a better hosting service that also supports more picture formats let me know, would you?

I wanted to get this posted and see if any of you fellow Kaleuns think this is a good badge for U-47 to sport from now on, beginning with my sixth patrol.

Very nice, but I think the snorting bull is probably one of the all time great emblems

If I recall correctly, the "snorting bull" was the actual emblem used on the real U-47, wasn't it?

Ah, so it was according to the link you gave, jimbuna. Obviously you're somewhat of a u-boat scholar.

But...it just ain't my style so that's what prompted me to create a new one.

I think I'm done for now. My eyeballs are beginning to bleed after spending so long concentrating intently on editing a black and white image!

Graf, your emblem looks cool to me; even more so since you drew it yourself.

I like your sly name, too.

Thank you very much on both counts, Sailor Steve.

It's not exactly worthy of hanging in a museum but it is supposed to be a u-boat emblem, after all, and I'm assuming those were usually painted on by ordinary sailors instead of professional artists. I went for simplicity to make the image easily discernable with the stock SH3 resolution settings.

I've already applied it to my u-boat and it does look quite nice sporting my very own custom emblem on my conning tower. I'd like to think me and the U-47's crew got together and made it while on shore leave. Picture a couple of the crew sitting on a board lashed over the side with brushes and paint buckets in hand while provisions and torps are being loaded below...

The ship getting smashed is supposed to be a destroyer to commemorate the consecutive sinkings of two destroyers that were hunting me after I hit a large convoy in my first patrol commanding U-47. I sank the first with a tail shot as I was trying to slip away and then got the second escort with tube #3 when they came running to get revenge for the first escort. I used electric eels both times at less than 500 meters range. Those Limey bucket sloshers didn't know what hit 'em!

I earned a Knight's Cross 1st Class and German Cross In Gold for that bit of daring.

And, yes, I know my nickname is a terrible pun but I've always been fond of cheese. :P

Try .png format. It's basically the same as .jpg with an alpha channel. I think tinypic accept png, not sure.

Nice emblem!

I agree Graf paper,it looks very good indeed, would love to have it on my U-boot It would be an honour to have a hand drawn emblem which exemplifies the U-boot intent

I've been working on a small emblem pack that I plan to release soon. Progress has been slow getting the emblems done due to real life keeping me very busy lately, not to mention the laborious task of working with my graphics program.

Hopefully, things will settle down in a few more days and I'll be able to concentrate on finishing the emblem pack.

@ Laufen zum Ziel : It's supposed to be a mail gauntlet. The torpedo thing you mentioned does give me an idea though... :hmm:

@ Schwartzkat3x & nikbear : Thanks for the compliments. I hope you'll both like the emblem pack when it's released.
