Is there a way to put the ST periscope-mounted range finding radar on the search scope?
Essentially, it would just be a button to ping the radar mounted on another retractable panel for the search scope. This button would automatically input the exact range and bearing to the TDC. Thus you could point the scope at the target, hit it with the radar once, wait 10-15 seconds, hit it again in the same spot, then estimate a much more accurate speed and course to find a precise angle on the bow, fire off your fish and watch the fireworks with a negligible chance of missing. Better still, you can pick exactly where you want your fish to hit the hull. This mod would, of course, only be available in 1945 as per the real deal but it would be an awesome addition none the less. |

Visual search of the target (through scope) and measurement of distance up to the target by (through) radio range finder ... ?

Exactly. It negates the need to use the stadimeter. A handful of our boats had them in 1945 (Such as the USS Pampanito), there's a website somewhere that talks about it, but I can't seem to find it. When looking at the head of the search scope it looks as if there are two lenses stacked vertically, but the lower one is a window for the radar range finder.

SH4 have object NSS_radar_periscop (and child Dummy_periscop_radar) in Sensor_Sub_Us.dat ... (I do not understand why names are different...?
![]() And Dummy_periscop_radar object has 2 SensorData controllers: SensorType 0 (visual) and SensorType 1 (radar) ... And SensorType 1 has next param's: PreciseRange = 6000 MaxRange = 20000 MinSensorHeight = 0 MaxSensorHeight = 20000 BearingMin = 0 BearingMax = 360 ElevationMin = 357.5 ElevationMax = 30 (not for airplane, i think) ... May be later (194?) it will be worked ... but as radar, not radio range finder ...

Bump!
I wanted to resurrect this post and also add in the idea of someone adding a 3D SD radar A-scope box to the US fleet boat cons. I know that we have some interior mod gurus in here. I can take pictures of the cabinets on the Batfish that stand next to the forward periscope housing. ![]()

I suppose periscope radar has been planed and someone even started working on it but was canceled due to time pressure on release.
Historicaly US-fleetboats did have periscope radar and it was the primary range finding tool. |
