Default Movies

WWII - there are a number of them (black and white) be easier to type in WWII Submarine movies in amazon - they are all cheap generally under 12 dollars US. One of my favroites is "Operation Petticoat" with Cary Grant. Cold War - try Ice Station Zebra - pretty good overall. Also try the BEDFORD Incident with Richard Whidmark - really good starts slow but builds nicely. Other than that the standard fare of Red October and the ultimate BS of CRIMSON Turd (Tide) lol. (Comex rant)K-19 is actually better than CRIMSON TURD - well actually VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA is better than CRIMSON TURD. If I ever had a Sonar Sup say "Conn - Sonar, Sonar - Conn, AKULA HUNTER KILLER B-345" I would choke him to death on his mike cord. Idiot. I would also microwave the dog for the hell of it and freeze all the JO's pillows. Man that movie is just plain one of the idiotic boomer fag flicks out there (finex rant)

Run Silent Run Deep isn't bad

I wish someone would make a modern version about US subs in the pacific during WWII...there are just so many good stories that need telling! I'd like to see them make one about the USS Wahoo...Not gonna' hold my breath though.

Happy viewing,

Howler

The Enemy Below

Pleasantly surprised with this one--though it's about a US Destroyer, attacking U-boats. Lots of cat and mouse--a real classic.

I think a remake of Run Silent Run Deep would be good except this time it should stick more closely to the book. IIRC the film was only very loosely based on Beach's book....pretty much the title and thats it!

But seriously....they could do a very good job with the effects available now, make it into an American Das Boot, plenty of gritty action and no punches pulled. Maybe somebody like Ridley Scott to direct?

Run Silent Run Deep. By Edward L. Beach
Das Boot. By Lothar-Gunthar Buchheim
Iron Coffins. By Herbert Werner
War In The Boats. By William J. Ruhe

Read all of those and can recomend them. Iron Coffins and War In The Boats are acounts of RL. Das Boot and Iron Coffins are obviously about U Boats but are still a good read. War In The Boats has some good stuff about S class boats in it and also bescribes some of the eccentric habits of some of the skippers too. Run Silent, Run Deep is better than the film of the same name.

Crash Dive is not to bad. It turns into more of a love story but it has some great shots of the real deal.

I watched Down Periscope with a WWII subvet and he loved it! He said that it was actually a pretty good depiction of a Balao Fleet boat and that Kelsy Grahmer (sp?) did a good portrayal of a non-Regular Navy Skipper. The seen with the tanker was "a bit" over the top though.

Sadly there has only been one modern movie about US submarines in WW2 and that was David Twohy's dismal Below. (2002)

The movie opens as a naval thriller, complete with the necessary sequences of the US sub being hunted by German escorts; (it's set in the Atlantic oddly enough) the dropping of depth charges; the intense moments as crewmen wait for the charges to explode; and some excellent CGI effects. Without much hint as to what’s about to happen, the film suddenly degenerates into a ghost story, with some vengeful spirit freaking out and in some cases taking out the sub’s crew, including its jittery C.O. and some shipwrecked British passengers. At this point the movie blows credibility faster than a sub blows it's ballast tanks.

As to the ghost story — well, if you aren’t able to guess the twist at the end, then you haven’t been watching nearly enough “Twilight Zone” episodes. And did I mention that the pacing and plotting is horrible? Or that the film is as scary as taking a nap?
