Default Accumulating Renound

Just how is renound acquired? You go out on a patrol and sink X number of ships and make it back to port.... is there a list of what each event is worth. If you sink a hospital ship it is massive negitive points; but how much? Just wanted to get a general idea.

You get renown for...

1. sinking enemy merchants
2. sinking enemy warships
3. downing enemy aircraft
4. reaching assigned patrol grid
5. remaining in assigned patrol grid for 24 hours
6. actually returning to port instead of hitting escape and selecting end mission

you lose renown for...

1. sinking friendly or neutral merchants
2. sinking friendly or neutral warships
3. downing friendly or neutral aircraft
4. sinking hopsital ships

i dont recall the exact figures, ill try to locate them for you, or someone else will post them. but each ship has its own renown value.

if i recall correctly - blowing a hospital ship out of the water will earn you NEGATIVE ten thousand renown points (yes... -10,000)... it would take several perfect patrols just to get back to zero renown for that mistake.

edit:

reaching patrol grid gives you 200 renown points
staying there 24 hours gives you another 200 renown points
actually returning to base to end you mission yields 100 renown points

each individual ship has its own renown value which can be found by locating the ships CFG file in your sh3 "sea" folder in the main SH3 directory,

for example an illustrius fleet carrier is worth 900 renown points, and a large merchant would be woth about 500 renown points etc

I had no idea that you could LOSE renown...and I have not even seen a hospital ship. I will be sure NOT to sink it..unless it is carrying enemy tonnaga.

not even then, technically... hospital ships are flying the flag of the international red cross, which so far as SH3 is concerned is a neutral entity. if its carrying what appears to be suspicious cargo and you sink it, the game will NOT differentiate the fact that it was under escort or looked suspicious or whatever... you still lose the 10,000 renown points no matter how strategically oriented your intentions may have been.

and the only way to get those points back is by completing several flawless patrols in a row where you bag a phenomenal total tonnage value.

NOT worth it at all IMHO.

just think what you could do if you didnt lose those 10,000 renown points.

upgrade the sub? Bold? Anti sonar coatings, radar, newest torpedoes?? get that sought after XXI class? get a promotion? or get the next award?

if you sink a hospital ship your looking at spending the entire remainder of the war catching up.

i know they are big ships, but think about what your sending to the bottom, pretty nurses & seriously injured soldiers... and you dont know what their nationality... just because it sails out of an enemy harbor doesnt meen it isnt loaded with captured German POWs.

hahaha, i just like to think like a real skipper;

fight with honor and make decisions that result in you getting back to port with your boat and all your men intact, all other objectives are secondary!

I've often wondered about renown. I'm assigned a far off grid that requires me meeting up with a milk cow or steamer in a neutral port. Initially I was assigned the patrol grid but now that I have re-fueled my next patrol destination is back to my home port. Do I still get renown if I continue to the previously assigned grid and then to port or is it not counted?

No as far as the game is concerned when you dock to a Milk Cow your patrol finishes. Therefore if you want to get renown for patroling the required grid you have to do it before you dock for fuel and torpedoes.

The other thing to bear in mind about renown is realism.

Seems to me that when I first started playing the game, at lower levels of realism, my renown per patrol was much lower than it is now. Regardless of of the amount of ships sunk.

If I had to guess I would agree that each ship has a certain amount of renown attached to it, but, the game rewards you a percentage of that renown in relation to the realism settings you have selected for that career.

Lifted from the community manual -

Renown and Realism

The renown you receive for sinking enemy ships is also affected by your Realism %. You will earn more renown for playing at a higher Realism %.
The formula for calculating renown (http://www.subsim.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=36293), per ship, is:
base ship renown value (see below) * ( (0.75 * realism %) + 0.25 ).Therefore, At 100% realism, you will receive full renown credit for every ship that you sink and at 0% realism, you will receive 25% of the renown credit for every ship.
