Default Berlin police wants Linux instead of Windows

Not happy with your Windows? You are not alone.

Berlin police is complaining about the current OS, Windows, freezing and locking way too often. To register a single standard report (Anzeige) often is interrupted and could cost between 30 and 90 Minutes, police says. The speaker of their union says they want the senate to move towards an open source OS solution, Linux for example, since there are many alternatives available, many of which are certified by the EU. The expensive licence fees for MS also could be saved that way. With the money saved, eventually policemen could get payed a small christmas money again.

Payment for police in Germany is not really a motivation factor. Which I consider to be a security risk.

Windows should not be freezing and locking up. Sounds like a HW problem to me.

Anyway, I have no qualms with them moving to Linux. Regardless the problems they are experiencing, Linux should be more widely used in government agencies. THe reason? MS has been doing secret updates to your OS without your knowledge lately, and if they can do that, what else can they do? That freaks me out from a National Security aspect.

PS. Compiling code on a Linux box behind me as I type this too.
