Is there a key that rigs for red or is it pot luck? I find no pattern to when it is red and when it is not.

You go red at night as to preserve the night vision of the crew, during the day you get the nice happy white lights.
I prefer the red lights myself...I play in the dark more often than not so I welcome the soft lighting. Mike

red lighting activates automatically in SH3 upon sunset.white lighting re-activates automatically upon sunrise.
In real life you could give the order to "rig for red" but you cannot do this in SH3.

Well, in real life the OOD would give the order, and it would be done, and the captain would never give it a second though. I like the game that way.
