I'm a huge fan of GWX and think it's a wonderful mod. But the enemy destroyers are killing me over & over and I'm wondering if there's any way I can revert to the stock AI until I have a bit more experience at evading them?

Hummm... not so sure if thats possible or not ..... I am still in the year 1940 but from past experience just using stock SH3 they are easy to avoid ..... when they get too close just go to silent running and if thats not enough drop the knots to 1 or stop engines and change to a deeper depth .......

Bosk. I've been playing for two years now and with GWX I get wasted within two or three patrols even now. Don't take it personal them tin cans are just doing their job.

The AI is smart... but not unbeatable. The best tips to evade Destroyers for the new GWX player are things I did...
1) use the external cam (and before anybody jumps on me from 20,000 feet and says "Oh thats cheating) well I disagree, I see it as using every available resource your game settings allow you. 2) Put the original U-mark back. 3) Keep your distance from destroyers and prior to 1942 when attacking ships. do so at night and when stalking close to a convoy set your depth to 6m so that your boat is low in the water. |

Somewhere on the forum you can download a sim/sensor file to tone down the
ai to reality. But i can`t find it now either. Somewhere i have it on any of my cd`s.

I'll forewarn anyone using this mod, it effectively turns off all AI sensors except one and the one that's left on, is always on, regardless of whether you have been spotted or not. There is a second option, Rubini's Mod. This extends the sensor range of the players boat. However, again certain aspects of GWX will not work as billed if this mod is used. Due to this reason, it will not be included in the upcoming 1.04. Either way, if you are finding GWX too hard in terms of AI capabilty, read (as suggested) the GWX Uber AI Demystifed Sticky. It will help you immensly to understand the capabilities of the AI.

Ok i am convinced but still thinking the you meet only convoys later in the war.
But i can survive. I have no problems with the destroyers. I use my tactic to make much noise and when a destroyer is about 400 mtrs away from me i torpedoe him. With my new campaign i am in may 1942 and i am playing 100%.

I eventually had to use better tactics and engage when I was able to gain the tactical advantage. I use sniper tactics...shoot and scoot. As soon as I have fired all torps from bow tubes (a couple of fish for each target attacking the furthest target first to try to get hits as simulteneous as possible) I dive and move away as fast as I can and as quiet as I can. If I execute properly, I get 3 boats before they start looking for me and I am no longer in the area where I fired from. Dont get greedy to get k's...there are always more convoys and other coastal hot spots to get single merchants. I get killed far more by running into a destroyer in the fog or by air power than I do from attacking convoys. If I didnt die from time to time I would get bored. The ai is solid...its a sim!
