Default Ahhhhh! where to start...

Typical newbie reaction I suppose...lol...

I just loaded up SH3 & the patch a few days ago & have been having a very disjointed fun time.

Just learning the keyboard & putting things together in my old head are quite challenging.

I want to work my way up slowely to where I can do the game manually as much as possible, but there is so much to learn.

My math skills are at a definate disadvangage here...also, my hearing is very bad..

I have been reading everything that I can in the newbie links...and very well done they are, but there is so much as to make it a hard decision on where to start...lol

I do know that the crew settings are going to be "0" because that is the chiefs job & I don't want to even mess with that.

I guess the 3:15 plotting rule would be the #1 place to start followed by the headings and then the hydraphone sounds..which I can't make any sense out of so far...lol..

Is there a good quick mission type where there are perhaps two or three ships in different areas to practice doing the math on without getting distracted by those pesky DDD's (dirty dang destroyers)?

Something I can do over and over and over 400 times until I get it...lol

Which realism settings should I actually have on to make learning this stuff the best.

I like having the outside views on because I like to look around ..it makes the game more enjoyable for me to see things happen...

Like I said, I have read a lot, but it has just confused me more...lol

Thanks..

Welcome to the forums Papa!

From one newbie to another, all I can say is hang on! It does seem confusing at first but you have to give it time. This is not one of those games that you can master in a day or two. I'm still learning the 3:15 rule and how to do manual targeting with torpedos. I'd suggest going through the Naval Academy first. That should give you some practice with different areas of the submarine. It just goes over some basics. The whole crew management thing is a bit much for me as well, but I think it's something we'll both get used to eventually and won't think much about it. Besides there are some mods you can download that will turn crew management off completely.

Anyways, hope you enjoy your stay here. There are a ton of very helpful people on these boards and I'm sure many will post on your thread to give you much needed advice.

Happy hunting!

Hi papag39:
Welcome to the Forum!!!
i agree with you... there are many, many things to learn, but you have to be patient and constant.
I can tell you that every time you play with this you will learn more things, it's easy to enjoy playing SH3, so learning is fun, even when you f... up things. It's a game and you can always start all over....
There are many single mission wher eyou can practice and I would higly recommend you to do the Academy training too.
At the top of this Forum, you will find a stickie thread made with many good advices, tactics and procedures to help newcomers in their first steps into this wonderful SH3 world.
Just play standard 1.4b patched SH3 for a couple of weeks until you get more familiar with the nuissances, and then you might want to jump into a different dimension using one of the super mods such as GWX, WAC or other.
I hope you enjoy this.

Try the training missions - the convoy one is probably the most useful as you get to experience using your hydraphone, setting up your torps and using your attack map..

Once you get used to SH3 get GWX its the best mod out there!!!

Ohh, and welcome to the forums and good luck!!!!

yeah, thanks all...
I have done all of the training missions through severeal times each and what I was trying to find now was a "Add-on" map with my boat in the middle and 3 ships in different positions around me, and going in different directions...to practice on...

The convoy has to many ships and they are all going East so I was looking for something less busy...lol..

I don't know, but are you even able to make up scenarios in SH3 like what I have described?

Try the single mission Happy Times: you will encounter a convoy close-by which is almost devoid of escorts....the are rushing in from a distance though. You can even pick a U-boat of your liking.

That gives you just enough time to play with the maths a little and pick of some nice merchants....if you approach it well, you can easily achieve a perfect 90 degrees firing position; the mission is not called Happy times for nothing!

Thanks ReM, I'll give that a try...
I also DL'ed Raduz"s Hydrophone Tutorial & will give that a try. It may work for both the hydrophone & 3:15 etc stuff.
This sub sim looks like it has the makings of a loooong learning curve..lol
