Default Fuel efficient routes

Hi,

Does SH4 model the earth's curvature so you can do a sort of parabolic route to get to Japan from Hawaii?
I run at 9-12kts (which sould be the most efficient speed for a Gato) and by the time I get to Japan, I need to get back.
Last time I left with more than half the fuel but I found a couple of ships, so with the manouvering and all that I didn't have enough fuel left to get to Midway to refuel!

Thanks.

Default Interesting question

wow I hadn't really thought of that. If the Devs did factor the surface of a sphere into the fuel consumption calcs I owe them a new level of respect

Run at 10 knots, not 11 or 12. The S class runs best at 7 knots.
The devs made the earth a flat place, so the shortest route from A to B is .................

I know this was WWII, but a flat earth?

I'll try a run at 10kts and see if I can get back home alive.

The SH4 is flat as a shorty stack.

No great circle routes needed here.

I remember the same question with Silent Hunter III

From what I understand it is a question of computing power. It is far more complex for a computer to calculate movement across a 3D sphere then on a 2D surface - so developers choose the latter approach and give the illusion of a round planet by limiting the horizon through haze.

Saying that, I'm supprised there isn't a way to implement the need for Parabolic courses etc even on a flat map. Or am I just being a bit too hardcore?

I've found out what happens. My batteries only recharge up to 98%, so I'm burning a lot of diesel I should be saving. Once I turn battery recharging off, I can get back to refuel.
