Default Careless AI II

Last time a posted about a destroyer ramming and helping me to sink a light cruiser. This time (using 1.3) I was caught at periscope depth by an escorting DD that I somehow missed during my sweep. I thought I was dead. The DD went right past my stern as I hit "crash dive" and swung the scope around. I'm not sure what exactly happened because it happened so fast, but this is what I think. The DD slowed as he dropped his depth charges, and then backed his engines. As I swung my scope around I saw fire on his fantail and then a few moments later the DD disintegrated in a huge explosion. He had to be a victim of his own ashcans! We didn't collide and there were no other Alleid forces around (it's Janaury 1942).

I was left unscathed!

that is fairly common. ussually it happens in a crowded area, when a destroyer has to slow down to avoid a collision.
there was a mod that replaced the nuclear depth charges with ones that didnt blow up everything in a 3 mile radious. not sure what it was, but it reduced the unbleievable reach of depth charge blast.
and that one also stopped the destroyers popping like baloons too.
as it stands depth charges cause damage over something daft like 100 feet. meaning that if your at periscope depth, the destroyer will kill itself unless its moving when it drops the charges.
because it doesnt drop them deep enough to avoid theyre reach so to speak.

the damage they do is fine, but its the crazy reach of the things. ive had them go of two sub lenghts behind me and a sub lenght to the side. and died before

thanks
thats the one i meant. i do beleive his mod doesnt "dumb down" the game but actually makes it more realistic.
those things can take you out at crazy ranges in the default game.
dying is one thing, dying when i shouldnt, is another
now to see if it works with 1.3
