I'm a rookie in this game and I have some qeustions.
When attacking a convoy, the destroyers always spot me with their hydrophones. I try to divve below the thermal layer but when I surface to shoot I get spotted again. What do I have to do? Second question: I can't acces my radar. Is this a bug in 1.2? Third: What do the circles around an enemy ship mean? Last edited by LEnd; 06-21-07 at 08:41 AM. |

Well they dont "see" you with the hydrophones they hear you. Keep quiet and present a low aspect to the 'looker'.
The first thing to do is to not let them know your there untill the torpedoes start exploding. Use low speed around 2 or 3 knots when submerged and only pop up the scope for either a quick look around or the actual attack. Learn to use your sonar to work into position and rise to periscope depth only when ready to attack. Radar... Do you have one installed ? Just because you see a scope doesent mean you have a radar installed. Some boats cannot accomodate radar at all. Also currently the radar (if you have one) only works when your ship is facing southward. Its a bug to be fixed in the upcomming patch. Circles... when a unit is selected on the map a series of concentric circles appear. The outermost circle is there 'line of sight' if you are within this circle you have a chance of being spotted. The second inner circle is a rough repenstation of the ships ... uhh... line of listening ? If you look you will see a triangle from the stern of the ship. The sonar is more or less deaf in that triangle, they can hear just fine everywhere else. |

Welcome Aboard!
A couple of things - you said they spot you on the hydrophones - they cant do this if your surfaced - so you can always try a surfaced approach. Either way - speed = advertising where you are. Stay slow as mentioned above. Second thing - some escorts have a small semicircle in front of them as well - this is the Active Sonar Cone - if you get in it - they can find you with active sonar (pings). Either attack at long range from outside the destroyer screen - or place yourself where the DD's pass you - stay very slow (you are at silent running right?) and then pop up the scope for limited times - shooting observations or quick looks around. You can use the sonar lines to see bearing changes so that you know when escorts have passed you. Oh - and periscope observations - not only fast - but keep the scope as close to the water as you can - higher is more visible. As you approach remember - you are the SILENT Hunter - slow and deliberate.

I had to post a correction to my previous post.
Radar only works when facing north of 270-90. ![]() |
