So I was caught trying to enter a convoy, had serious flooding, and ended up battling it out in the surface against the destroyers. Amazingly, I won
![]() But now I have no rudder. The USS Lapon is off the Philipine coast in july 1944, full of holes, but with working engines, but no way to steer. In real life, I guess I could steer with the engines, or abandon ship and call for another sub to pick up the crew, or just swim ashore and wait for MacArthur. Having no way to do any of that in game, I'm resolved to get myself a new rudder and see if I can get back home on the surface. Does anyone know what should I edit for that? I've tried the ActivePlayerUnits.upc in the savegame folder, even replacing it with one from an undamaged save, but it doesn't change anything ![]() |

I just found out winds push your boat around, changing your heading, when you are surfaced...
Boy, this could be a long trip home ![]() |

I started a help topic abuout this.
It is very anoying the frecuency at wich you loss both, port and straboard items, and remain with no propulsion. It must be posible, but not too often as now. My intemption was to give asymetrical hitpoints values to port and straboard items, to reduce the chance to loss both diesel engines, both rudders, both electic engines, both propeller axis at same time....it was posible into .cfg file, but sadly it seems to be remains from SH III (wate lines not used) The game pick up some values now from .upc files, and there port and straboard items seems to be not diferent, then a single depth charge hit there, and you loss both items, and you remain with not propulsion. I was able to do it with periscope, i rise up the observation one values, then a single hit there, and you sure loss the attack one but the observation one become severe damaged, and after many repair hours you can recover it. Of course a very well aimed hit can make both periscopes lossed, but it is not frecuent now. Sadly i dont reach to do it with diesel engines and electric engines, rudders, axis... Into the damage screen, you have 6 diesel engine items, 3 port, 3 straboard, if you loss a single one from each side, one port one straboard, you become with no propulsion, even when you have 2 working items at port, and another 2 working items at straboard... Some thing is buggy here, or i understand bad how the thing works.... :hmm::hmm: My solution was, to rise up too much the hit points for those items, diesel, electric engines, rudders, and axis... Then... only a very well aimed depth charge explosion let me with any of both engines, diesel or electric, or both ruddewrs, or both propellers axis... I was able to "control" the domino effect, but remain some thing to improve the damage model. Manage symetrical damage into asymetrical damage. AAA crew taking damage if you forget to remove them from their AAA battlestations. (game assume they are outside even when you are submerged ![]() AAA damage is not repaired disregrading the time elapsed or if you maned them or not after damage. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

FWIW, I managed to return to base by exploiting a bug, which I'll detail in case someone else is in the same situation.
If you are missing the rudder, you can still order turns, but they won't have any effect. However, if you save the game with your non-existent rudder turned, upon reload the boat will start to turn, and then stop as the game realizes there is nothing to turn with (I think this is because the game gives the boat a starting rotational velocity based on the rudder position, even if there is none). So, with repeated saves and reloads, you can more or less steer your boat. Be warned, though, that a destroyed rudder will not be fixed by a refit, you really need to end patrol at your main base (this is another bug, I think). I suggest you have a good book nearby while trying this ![]() |
