Does it give you a higher rank by completing it or is it just a thing to give players a better feel for the game?

Completing the Naval Academy gives you 1000 extra renown for your career

If I remember correctly you need around 2500 renown to get your first promotion.

If you want to do the academy, do it with vanilla SH3. It is impossible with GWX.

(Probably) higher realism level,matey. The academy missions were designed to run with vanilla, not GWX. GWX makes it WAY harder, or impossible..
