Can anybody tell me if it is possible to attack ships underwater, with no visual contact to the target. I notice a message always comes up when I begin a mission, "hydrophones Damaged" I know that in real life a commander could attack targets, at depth, say 120 mtrs. It would be great to attack targets deep underwater. Thanks for the forum.

The XXI is very buggy in stock SH3 but it is fixed in GWX.
I think you can conduct an attack with the XXI using just the sonar but certainly not as deep as 120m. I think the limit (without modding it) in the XXI is about 25 - 30m which is more than the other types.

It'd have to be totally manual. Calculate the solution entirely on the board (get range and bearing a few times, draw line between points to get course and thus AOB), enter the TDC data manually, etc.

Maybe you want to take a look in here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=110619
Video-Tutorial (~ 123 MB) for an underwaterattack using only passive hydrophones. Have fun!

As I understand it, the tyoe XXI could fire torpedos from below periscope depth using a hydrophone system designed for the task. Not sure how deep the attacks could take place at though.

It was a feature in the XXI's design brief, but not a feature in commander training.
The XXI can fire from a max of 50m depth.

Attacks in RL using hydrophones did take place but very rarely. Torpedos could not be launched as deep as 120m because of the water pressure....the internal watertight tube doors were not designed to withstand such pressure

In real life, a fully underwater attack without the the aid of the periscope never took place in combat in WWII.
Maybe the Germans did it in training, and there is a story about a simulated attack in the last days of the war, but a real fully submerged attack never took place in WWII. Additionally, when England sank the Argentine Cruise during the Falklands War, the captain of the British sub confirmed his firing data through the periscope.

I'm proud to say I've done a Sonar only attack in Silent Hunter III, in my trusty VII-B
*Admitedly it was against a Destroyer charging straight at my stern doing 20 odd knots when I fired a T-V at the blighter..*
