Default Regarding Porting GWX over to SH4

Concerning whispers of porting GWX across to SH4. The GWX Dev team will be the ones to do it when the time is right.

Methinks we've earned that right. No offence is intended to anyone else who may be considering it.

At any rate, until all the official Ubisoft SH4 updates are completed I see it as relatively pointless to modify non-GWX files that may be changed without notice... requiring possible re-modding.

At the GWX Dev Forums, there is already talk of porting GWX to SH4. So for those interested, it is on the radar.

Meanwhile before the big switch-over, we've still got a final task to perform for SH3/GWX in the pipelines.

The material in the GWX supermod has not been abandoned gentlemen.

All in good time mates! We may be slow due to the quantity of material we address... but just wait 'til we fire our guns.

Personally, i don't think the graphic's "upgrade" in SH4 is worth the effort and time involved. Maybe im too logical about things, but why go through months of extranious efforts to do the exact same thing in a shiny new wrapper?

Are you talking about making a GWX mod for SH4?

@clayton: yes, that's how I interprete Kpt Lehmann's post.

GWX team: I guess you can't keep a good modder (or modding team) down, eh?

Thanks for the good news, and appreciate your efforts in improving these 2 fine sims.

You are naturally entitled to your opinion.

However, what we refer to at the moment is converting SH4 to a U-boat sim... or bringing original GWX elements to SH4 from SH3 that are not present in SH4 now... but may be useful.

Logic is in the eye of the beholder isn't it?

SH4 opens all kinds of doors for the GWX Dev team. Whatever direction we choose to go with our package is up to the team. It will be useful and cool to many... and useless to others.

We tend to think big and build big over here.

Thanks for your input.

Converting SH4 into a U-boat game would indeed open new horizons in modding. As it is GWX is reaching a limit with what it can do with SH3 in terms of BIG changes, am I correct? Hard coded issues are not capable of being altered. However in SH4 there are already things which can allow the GWX fella's to add some newer more immersive features.

For one you could actually be sent on a mission! Maybe get better updated orders from Bdu (which is definitely exiting to me since rather than the unleached way SH3 is, the real u-boats were carefully micromanaged). The overall modelling of physics and especially the damage model is interesting.

So much can be done. And we haven't even really cracked open SH4. I don't think its just about the graphics. Its also about lonjevity. By giving GWX and u-boats a newer platform it lets it last longer. It will feel less dated in the wait for the next official u-boat game.

The reasons I could think up would go on.

But I certainly know that it would certainly give me more exitement about owning SH4.

*sigh* yeah i know. It just really bums me that the instant we get a US Fleet boat sim (for the first time in a long long time), the first thing people want to do, is make it into yet another German uboat sim; without even giving the us fleet boats, or the history of the pacifc a chance. This isn't isnt directed at anyone in specific (least of all you or the GWX crew), just as a general commentary. I just wish people would "expand their horizons" to play a pun on an old GWX forum sig.

Personal disheartenment aside, there are some really good technical reasons to use the SH4 engine- and i dont mean graphics. That said, the SH4 engine overall strikes me as nothing more then a mod of SH3. Theres ALOT of leftover Sh3 artifacts in the directory structure, alot of which are not being used, or only partially used.

Who said anything about removing the ability of a player to use the U.S subs????

Besides, it is a simple matter of interest. If you arent interested in U-boats any longer... why post on a thread that aims to please U-boat players and share your personal dis-satisfaction with them.

No one is going to put a gun to your head and make you play SH4/GWX. Just pick and choose and blend your mods as you always have. Why not let those moving in different directions do as they please without peeing on the blanket?

Seriously, since I wouldn't have any interest in the Leichensteinian Navy... I wouldn't even bother reading posts regarding it.

Don't have time right now to read the whole thread, I'll be back later, but I just want to say that it already sounds promising, wonderful, incredible, immense, splendid, fantastic, miraculous, considerable, awesome, hallucinatory, extraordinary, admirable, colossal, enormous, exceptional, fabulous, marvellous, phenomenal, extraordinary and remarkable. Yes sir.

I guess we have a right to play the game we want and not be booted in the a** by UBISoft for not wanting to go to The Pacific!
If the Kpt is good enough and able to do all that work for us I am sure it will be something special.
I am staying with the U-boat Waffe no matter what!

Great news, but does this mean there will not be a specific GWX mod for the Pacific campaign? What I mean is one that makes over the whole Pacific theatre the same way GWX did for SH3 (which is still a great sim IMO don't know why everyone wants to give up on it) with say Dutch, Australian and British ships added, more ports, better AI (meaning sensor and airbase) tweaks and the lot. That would be disappointing, unless we could get RN and maybe some other sub options.

Good luck anyway.

Hmm, I think it's more that nobody would be able to do it as good as you (the GWX team) are.
I think also that it's a good thing to share the work : the SH3 to SH4 porting is the job of one team, then the conversion GWX for SH3 to GWX for SH3 with all SH4 new improvements is the work of the second.

(excuse me for not speaking a perfect english) BTW, I heard that a new SH4 "mission improvement" is that some missions consist in taking a photo of something : I wonder if it's going to be possible/do-able to make this kind of missions available for this future version of SH3.
Frankly, I already dream about that.
