Default Help, torpedoes!

Firstly I love this game, the graphics are awesome (apart from no AA) and I love the damage models. I have never played one of these games before and am having trouble. How to you get torpedoes to hit their target. I use the automatic targeting system, but ususally I get a poor or good lock. Everytime I have fired with a lock of this type the torpedo misses its target. Only when I have had a green/excellent lock have I hit the target! What am I doing wrong, and how can I get a green lock more often. All this means Im basically stuck on the 4th and final training mission (taking out the merchant ships).

Also, are some submarine classes better than others?

Thanks in advance....also thanks for that youtube video posted on here recently...impressed how this game runs on a lower rig.

Try opening the torpedo tube before launching (Q-key). It shortens the time needed to fire a torpedo.

1. Make sure the sub's long axis is at a very small angle to the torpedo solution (i.e. point the boat as close as possible to the torpedo path). At least point your sub towards the intended target.
2. Close the range (the closer you are to the target the more likely you'll hit it). That happens because the torpedo solution is plotted based on the target's current speed and bearing. If any of these changes, your solution is screwed. (i.e. that's why convoys zig-zag when they're attacked, so you can't plot accurate solutions at long distances). In SH3 you had pattern-following torpedoes, just for this purpose: if you couldn't penetrate the outer defence screen, you might've tried your luck with a long shot followed by a zig-zag pattern in the area where the ship might be. I'm not sure this is still implemented in SHIV.
