Default Eurovision 2007

Linton posted a link to Israel's entry to the 2007 Eurovision singing contest in another thread:

The Teapacks-"Push the button"

Israel is taking part in the Eurovision singing contest for many years now. But what about others like Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo and Lebanon?

A quick look on the Eurovison singing contest map done by "afoe/A Fistful of Euros":
"There will be four new members appearing for the first time: Georgia, the Czech Republic, Serbia, and Montenegro. As everyone knows, Serbia and Montenegro appeared for two years as “Serbia and Montenegro”, then didn’t appear last year -- they couldn’t agree on an entry -- and are now appearing as separate countries. The Czechs have inexplicably sat out Eurovision since splitting from Czecheslovakia a decade ago, but they’ve finally come to their senses.
...
One Eastern European entry we won’t see this year, though: Kosovo. The Kosovars won’t be participating.
Much to their annoyance! For several years now, the Kosovars have been sending bands and singers down to Albania to compete. Alas, the snotty city slickers down in Tirana have refused to pick a single Kosovar. Which has all right-thinking Kosovars really ticked off.
Pause here to contemplate the awesome power of Eurovision: without even trying, it is killing the idea of Greater Albania. How cool is that?
Mm, what else… oh, yes, Lebanon. We all remember the unhappiness in 2005, when Lebanon -- entering for the first time -- had to withdraw at the last moment. The problem was, Eurovision rules require the participants to broadcast the entire show, including every song; and Lebanese TV would not broadcast the Israeli portion. As a result, they were hit with a three-year ban, and aren’t eligible to enter in 2006, -7, or -8. It remains unclear whether they’ll ever come in." (http://fistfulofeuros.net/archives/002847.php)

I would like to add that hopefully Austria won't make it to the finals because they have the old tradition of giving zero points to Germany, Austria: "Germany zero points, Allemagne zéro points".

It looks like it will be a kick @ss party again. Get ready! :-)

The fun part in watching this is to find out who is singing this years’ worst song, who can’t hit the right notes anyway, who is wearing the worst dress and making the silliest dance moves, and all this is labelled under singing competition of international harmony and cooperation and at least on German TV the live comments during the show are brilliant with a slighty ironic undertone. Kind of a bad taste party really. Who will Europe choose this year? Are you hard enough to sit out the whole thing ?

Last year was more FUNNY than fun per se :p

Eh, it's all just mass appeal. In Russian we derogatorily call it "Popsa".

Entirely with joea on this; popsa of the finest variety. I can't understand how last year a lot of people were all "[Russia's] Dima Bilan should have won, these freaks were stupid" - and by the time I finished my 2-month stay in Russia in the summer I was thoroughly sick of Bilan and his damned Eurovision song.

for the Finns for at least being weird about it last year.

Don't watch Eurovision as I have other important things to do, like clipping my toenails!

BTW Dan D, your avatar looks perfect for Eurovision!!:rotfl:

Ahh, did I just hear someone giggle?
And I was just about to give up on you.
Now, come closer please. There you go.
And a little bit more. Not that close, please, you might scare me away.
Ok, well now, let me say first of all, that I hope that everyone is enjoying the show.
At the end of the show, I will pass my hat around, so you can drop by a bar tip.

Thx, Madam AL for pointing out that the band is known as “Tipp-Ex” in Israel.

The Israeli entry as well at the last years’ winning song “Hard rock hallelujah” from Ice-cool Finland and many other contributions of the past are in the true spirit of Eurovision, a contest that is taken deeply seriously in and around Europe. So far from being a camp joke, it has its special and very own touching charm. It has never been over commercialised; sponsorship does exist, but it is discreet. All the major record companies are ignoring this highlight of heart-moistening popular music which is organised by a federation of highly- professional national TV companies instead. The financial success of the winning song is thus guaranteed.
The contest remains refreshingly good-natured for some gloriously European reason with super-soulful music that is tugging at the strings of everyone’s heart, though the point counting system is of mind-breaking complexity.

For the first entry: “Israel ten points, Israel dix points.” That is reassuring, it also honours the attempt for some genius rock action and perhaps, giving almost all points to Israel is for appeasement reasons.

Where someone got the idea that the group's name has any other English spelling or relevance to tea is beyond me. The Wikepedia entry should be challenged.
