I recieved a letter from my step dad today (as i do every xmas) but in it he has said that two of the russian navys auxilaries are being laid up as of the end of the year.
Brezhina and also another auxilary of the boris chelkin class are to be permanantly laid up pending scrap. The brezhina has only recently been to sea during an exercise lasting 4 weeks in the white sea with small coastal escorts and patrol craft of the northern fleet. The brezhina is a auxilary capible of refueling re arming and re stocking ships while under way, she was built in 1977 and in the last 15 years hasnt sen much duty, since 1991 the brezhina has been to sea just 23 times (at sea more than 7 days). The brezhina is the only one of her class and her unique design was borrowed for the fort victoria class Auxilaries (some of her super structure looks anyways). The ship will be laid up in severomorsk in mid january 2007 and the she will wait untill the scrappers are ready for her, however she will be kept on a very small ready list so if the need arrises she can be put back into service.
