Default Crush depth

What is the true crush depth of the different SH3 U-boat types, or in other words...at which depth did you die?

According to the manuals the max depth of a VII is 225m, but I thought it could dive even deeper.

I went down to 500 meters once, but that was a glitch in the game, so it doesnt count....

I get to around 150 meters and my hull decides that it doesn't want to take the strain anymore. Can't figure out why! Maybe it doesn't like the way Bernard put it together when it was under construction!!

It is hard to know exactly what was the crush depth of those subs, at first it was a war secret, and after the war not too much info about that.

But at siome web pages is presented information about situations where they dive too deep and return.

Even with the design data, it is realative, because the hull suffer stress, and the crush depth sure will vary with the hull life time.

SH3 Dev. Team confused the maximun operative depth with the crush depth.

The maximun oparative depth was intended to ensure a good hull life time, but the maximun opartive depth not means the hull must crush at that depth.

In example if a hull with maximun oparative depth of 225m is used so never go down that value, in example it will have 2000 dives life time prior to have stress problems, intead if it dive frecuently to 300m, its life time may be reduced in example from 2000 dives down to 500 dives. (this values are only suposed examples, not real values)

In some places i remember to read, they ensure the crush depth was near to double of the max operative depth.

In example here... look at "The Boats" and then look at VII C/42 :

http://www.dataphone.se/~ms/ubootw/welcom.htm

I remember some times people mentioning historytells about determined sub which dives too much beyond the maximun operative depth and back home.

May be some body can remember any one.

This was a long discusion on SH2 and at early times in SH3, you can take the crush depths stored as data into the SH3 Crush Depth Mod from TimeTraveller as a good value.

Hope this can help you...

last night on a type VIIC 327 meters on GW1.1a after attacking a task force, the problem was getting it to surface again, flooded was fixed and it begin to go up again but it was too slow, the problem was that the hull integrity started to deteriorate even when i was going up again and so despite my brave damage control team at 259 meters it gave up on me . this was the deepest i have ever went without using the crash depth mod ( I WAS VERY SURPRISED )

Don't think any kaleun ever came back to report the true depth

Default with hull fixes

with hull fixes I still never go below 140 meters 95% of the time. The trick is getting below about 98 and then changing your depth at just the right moment as they dump DCs on you - going about 20 lower each time or even sometimes I come back to 70 if the angles are all correct.

I have actually quit playing SH3 for the moment because in tests I found I could too easily go through a screen of 6 DDs set to expert - that is when I use my decoys correctly. I take damage but nothing serious.

The truth is once you get the AI of the DDs completely down in your mind - you start crying because you don't have multiplay with humans in DDs!

Here´s what I know for sure from various readings (all figures refer to VIIb and c): - unlike the US Navy the German Navy calculated a security factor of 1.5 and 2.5, which means: 100m operational depth - (multiplied by 1.5: 150m maximum depth, e.g. when in danger, multipled by 2.5: 250m calculatzed cruch depth) - the (secret!) crush depth was considered to be around 250m for VIIb/c, but this was a calculted, theoretical figure - several U-Boats, the real U-96 being among them, went much deeper, e.g. U-96 was at about 280m and returned home - later in war, when commanders were more experienced, they normally went to 200m without hesitating, but they were careful not to go way deeper. - today´s scientific calculations estimate the actual cruch depth around 290 or 300m . the BIG problem about crush depth is that the hull didn´t usually just implode ("crush"), but the weak spots became more and more problematic, leading to flooding etc. So the relevant question isn´t so much about "when did the hull actually collapse", but "How ddep could they go without causing so unstoppable flooding"? - whereas SH3 is totally wroing about crush depth, GW is too optimistic, since they have 500m as a standard value. This is certainly exaggerated. I believe in the experience U-96 made and today´s calculation because they both say the same: lethal depth must have been around 300m. Cheers, AS

U-96 nearly buckled under all that pressure. The bolts were flying off so fast, it was like a pinball game inside the sub. Well, that's German engineering for you, you can push any vehicle to the limit, and have enough time to pray to God before the hull cracks up.
