Default Ahoy maties..

I've been trawling this forum for the past few weeks since discovering SHIII and thought it was time I introduced myself ...

I've been a Flight Simmer for a good many years, more recently making aircraft..as soon as I figure out the inner workings of SH I'll be fiddling with that as well...

I'm using vanilla plus patch plus GW, applied with JSGME...with SHIII Commander and SHIII Gen on the side..and I wouldn't have found all of that without the excellent noob post...thanks for making it easy folks...and hey, picking up the slang as well.

At the moment at Lorient prior to sixth patrol, realism is minimal whilst I figure it all out..

This may be OT but my connection to a Subsim is that my father, uncle and great-uncle were all submariners..the latter during WWI...I spent a lot of time as a kid fiddling with stuff on the boats during official and unofficial 'Family Days'....but I remember more than anything that despite lots of soap my Dad still stank of diesel and mildew.....

Good hunting

Welcome, have jumped in myself lately and also come from 20 years of flight sim (mostly flying though rather than modding ). Thks for the link, very interesting reading. Wait until you play full realism and DiD, it's in someway like flying war missions : 3 hours of boredom and some minutes of pure terror... But it's for those minutes that we spend many hours scanning an empty horizon or hearing blank silence on the hydrophone. Just for the adrenaline shot when after letting the sim run while you read a book or do anything else, on one more routine hydrophone check you discover the faint Chuk-chuk of a distant big three-blade propeller... Back to battle station, counting the blade rotations to have an idea of the boat speed, calculating with fever your intercept course, then later in the periscope a smoke on the horizon... Checking the speed, bearing, getting in position, manning torpedo room, entering data in the TDC, waiting breathless for the big fat tanker to reach the spot for 0 gyroangle, last check on the flag... and OMFG ! it's a neutral...

Sank a couple of neutrals on last patrol..thought they were stragglers from the convoy up ahead..it was dark and I didn't ask questions....the merchants are firing back so didn't want to take any chances with a relatively rookie crew...

I'm finding crew management a chore...I wouldn't have thought it was a Kaleun's job to put the boys to bed (I'm using GW 8 hour fatique watch)

I'll up the realism on next patrol.....

Cheers.....

Welcome To Subsim.com

the best Community for Subsimmers out there

I had the same problem....I was hunting the American coast, a big cross on the ocean without shooting something..nothing...emptyness...I was reading a book and when close to the american coast I decided to go submerged and my Hydro reported a sound contact..

Man Battlestations!
I went closes and didnt see any smoke because I popped up the scope at the moment the boat was in a 1000 meters range...I popped up and saw an Enemy....

fishing boat......

I went mad...So I surfaced and shot the bugger with my Deck Gun...

but that was my downfall of my IXC , the American Coastal guard came in action...30 minutes in game I had 3 Destroyers crawling on my back...pinging me and depth charging me....

Welcome to SubSim

I was having problems like these as well. I was close to Cuba in 1941 before the US entrance to the war and I saw a large tanker. It was very dark and since tankers don't appear so often I lunched 2 torpedoes. As it started burning and listing I've realised it was american, but there was nothing I could do by that point. So I've used the deck gun to send him down as soon as possible. A bit more than half an hour later a catalina spotted me and directed 2-3 destroyers towards me. It was the end. I was charged and bombed for more than 2 hours, until I was hit by a bomb on the conning tower. The U-boat exploded and I went to meet the maker

Moral of the story?? If you attack neutrals make sure they go down before they know what hit them

There must not be many kapt'ns here who didn't one day sink a neutral...

I don't mind crew management myself but if it is too much of a pain, you can use SH3Commander to totally disable fatigue. Another tip is to alter the "main" file of your cfg folder in MyDocuments/SH3 by setting a lower 3Drender max value. At any TC above this, the fatigue don't work (but also so does the resting..) I think each of us adjusts this fatigue to his own idea.

For the realism, it's up to you when you feel comfortable, I remember it took me a lot of time to fly 100% in IL2/PF with complex engine management, no padlock, no minimap path, etc... Now that I do, I enjoy it a lot more...

For SH3, it also took me a long time to go to full manual TDC, I always kept the WO help "just in case"... Once you get it, in fact you realise it was not that difficult and it makes the experience much better, if you are a die hard simmer.

Welcome aboard King_bip

I like your choice of mod....you'll love GWX when it's released. Obviously your now aware that neutrals as well as enemies can radio help when they spot you

Good Hunting
