Before anyone picks me up on that the ship was actually formerly HMAS Torrens, a River Class Destroyer Escort in the RAN.
The River Class DE's were a variant of the Leander class Frigate which were reclassified in the 1960's from ASW Frigate to DE. Still it made a nice boom when she got thumped by theat keel shot! She was sunk by a Mk48 ADCAP (Advanced Capability) torpedo with a convential warhead fired from over the horizon. The first explosion is from the pressure wave from the explosion and the 2nd blast is the actual explosion itself travelling slightly behind the pressure wave. The keel as you can see gets badly bent out of shape by the first and then snapped by the 2nd. |
