Question for Video card experts

Given a fairly robust system (P4 3.6, 2 MB RAM, 525 watt power supply) would there be much of an advantage to switching from an ATI 9800 Pro 128 MB to a eVGA GeForce 7800GS - 256MB?

Isn't there a sight that allows you to compare cards. Check pix and shading quailities, etc? I would look there first. I have always used GeForce and never had a problem with them. I have always been satified with clarity and 3D effect etc.

Judging from the 9800 and that fact you want to get a 7800GS, you have an apg board. I strongly suggest that if you have the money you could possibly upgrade to a new motherboard with pci express. The 7800GS looks like its going to be the last card made in apg.

I got my hands on a 7800GT a month ago and built a new computer to run it for $800 because my old box was apg. Used some of the things fro my old computer to keep the price down. Specs: 7800GT, AMD Athhlon 64 X2 4200, gig ddr2 6 something, msi k9 platnum, x-fi sound card, 2 NEC DVD burners, 2 250 gig WD hd.

EDIT: Saw the post before mine - I think I read somewhere that the GS cards are ones that failed or just weren't quite good enough in the tests to become GT's because the GS's are toned down because of the apg's lower bus rates. (don't hold me to that though)

Not just much, but day and night difference. Even some of the 6600GT`s are better than the 9800 Pro.

That 7800GS is AGP right? If so its actually an 7800GT sold as GS, for some reason.

That is one of the best cards available to AGP, so it should make your gaming experience pretty awesome.

With the Omega drivers you can benchmark your card and compare it to others. Also SIS Sandra 2006 is excellent for benchmarking and comparing I found.

There will be a tremendous boost by moving to a 7800GS, from a 9800 Pro. However, you could stand to overclock your processor as well.

I have the 9800 pro, as we speak , and I believe , unless you are going to do some serious (big money) updating,you would probably be as well off to stick with what you have. Yes, I've seen newer , higher powered cards, but, I'm not willing to spend the money , for no more gain ,that is involved. As you can see by my post count, I seldom respond to posts, however , I felt strongly about this topic. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Why? Wouldnt you be better waiting a few months when there is a better choice and getting all DX10 stuff .

Because with my set-up I am stuck with AGP. As I don't feel like changing my mainboard, ram and videocard I thought I might take one of these on.

And...

I gotta tell you, this is one niiiiiiice card. So far it has handled everything I can throw at it without even breaking a sweat. No more stuttering in ports or around convoys, I can watch burning tankers without any stuttering at all, it laughs at the bow spray in heavy seas (GW's and Particles on full, by the way) and even Lock-On; Flaming Cliffs is no match for this set up now.

I did go with the BFG overclocked version and, with the features of this card, I should be good for another year or so.

Hi John... there are not too much AGP card abailable there around, just buy the most powerful you can found.

That is a nice card, and a good add to your PIV 3.6 Ghz.
