1.09 beta Owwwwww!
I am so getting my bum handed to me on a plate. I got away with a couple of missions, both considerably more challenging than before the update until I got the intercepting the invasion fleet at Keflavik/Reykjavik.
There was already a torpedo in the water before I'd even classified anything and when I shot a counter salvo (to keep them busy or so I thought) down their bearings all hell let loose and I didn't even have to hear hide nor hare of an MPA or a helo to be swimming like a frightened mackerel. I was so comprehensively swamped with torpedoes, more than I had ever seen but over a longer time period. I've studied at Jive Turkey's school of torpedo evasion but after around 35 minutes of 'flank ballet' during which time they were just dropping a few more, then a few more, I ran out of tricks and couldn't evade any more. I'm sitting gripping a stiff drink and waiting for my pulse to get back to normal. Did I mention I'd taken the difficulty down to mumble/mumble/hurrumph/... "easy" to get used to the update. A final "sensible" point. I really miss not seeing all of the control consoles visible without the playable subs mod. I don't think it would have made that much difference in this mission but things do go more smoothly with all of them on display. Phew! Last edited by spindrift; 12-15-17 at 05:23 PM. I have still been able to experience a great deal of success in the campaigns... however the sea very quickly turns into torpedo soup, often times before i have even had much of a chance to look at the contact map, get my bearings and give my first order i am fired upon.
of course that eventually results in evasive maneuvers which further gives away my position and everyone on the map then gives me a salvo. generally that results in torpedoes numbering in the teens swarming me, when they arent swarming me, they are homing in on the guy that fired them, or his buddy. often sinking them in the process. the most i think i have ever had on me was a recent 18(!) torpedoes in the water. in fact, at this point, it is my only complaint about cold waters from a tactical standpoint. in modern naval warfare, when you have friendly and neutral units in close proximity to an enemy unit, and you unleash ALL your torpedoes at once... you're just begging for collateral losses. Is it really worth it to sink that sturgeon class sub, if it is going to cost 18 torpedoes, a sub of your own and two escorts? also with modern sub warfare, one thing i have learned, is once you get found... it is virtually impossible to get un-found. unlike Silent Hunter III, where you can drop a bold, and they will attack it, or focus on it for long enough in game for you to creep a way and maintain a low aspect ratio and you have a fair chance of sneaking off. modern subs, IMHO are a first strike weapon. if cold waters is even 10% correct in its simulation of modern sub warfare - I dont think if two major super powers went at it against each other like in the case of the Soviets and NATO that there would be a long, drawn out, submarine campaign like in the old days. I give it a week, and there wouldnt be any major submarine threat from either side.

I think the game is much more challenging now and with the aggressive and trigger happy soviets, it doesnt feel like a shooting gallery any more. The developer and modders will be adjusting AI behaviour in the future, I'm sure it'll come out better. |

GoldenRivet makes some good points, subs as a first strike weapon in particular. I also have confidence along with Erik in the devs and modders interest in trimming the experience between challenging game and terrifying torpedo fest.
In the meantime here we go again, one more before I retire trembling to bed. 8-) Cheerio! |

Impossible missions on beta 1.09
On the, "just before bed" mission, I had to intercept an enemy battle group sortieing from Murmansk. Proceeding at flank from Holy Loch I arrived in the area just in time to be told that there was no target available and the following screen showed a carrier from our forces had been sunk. This is on "Easy". Of course this is a beta release but I think some re-calibrating is needed.
Cheerio encore. |

Do you start the campaign missions at maximum range, or closer? Because so far I have been attacked by enemies other than DE subs before shootig myself only once, and even that was purely my mistake: a helicopter or ship radar saw my periscope, esm bar was maxed out. It was a storm with 115 dB backround noise and I thought they were a lot further than what they were because I didnt hear them.

does anyone know if any of the mod out there will work if installed after the beta was installed. Also I agreed with earlier post ref being swarmed by torpedo before you can do anything.

Pretty sure it will update any files that are out of sync with the current build.
