Default Spontaneous Ship Sinking

Today I saw one of the strangest things I have ever seen in the boat game. I was hunting this tug sailing between Lyttelton and Wellington when I heard explosions. When I got the scope up, I saw it was sinking. Not once have I seen a ship spontaneously sink in this game under these conditions. What I have seen, of course, is the bug where a big liner randomly sinks, and small merchants in convoys being swamped by rough seas. This was in calm seas, 7kt wind, and the tug didn't seem to be struggling at all before the explosion. I flew the camera around to see if there were any mines, but couldn't find any, and indeed there aren't any when I checked the campaign files.

My guess? Insurance fraud

But seriously, has anyone seen a small boat sink randomly in calm weather?

I have seen ships sink in bad weather.

If the waves swamp a ship compartment and place it below the "crash depth" specified in the zones.cfg file, the ship will incur damage. Crash speed in zones.cfg specifies how many hit points per second the compartment loses when it is below crash depth. Eventually, a ship in a bad storm may sink. Especially if you have a mod to increase the maximum wave size. Damage may be represented as a fiery explosion if that's what zones.cfg specifies (yes, unrealistic on a foundering ship).

Also, modders who tinker with the ship's center of gravity may cause the ship to roll over in high seas. The higher the center of gravity, the easier it rolls over.

You may want to examine that ship's compartments and give them a deeper crash depth using Silent 3d editor if this keeps happening.

I have seen torpedo boats crashing and sinking when harbor raiding.

That is karma for trying to sink my U-boat.
