Default removing range estimate with "nearest visual contact"

As we know, when you ask your crew for "nearest visual contact", you get the target's bearing and exact distance in feet.

Is there a way to mod this so you only get the target's bearing, but not the exact range?

I did a search, but did not find anything, currently playing TMO 2.5.

Try RFB. It only gives you Short, Medium, Long Range.

I havent played RFB for a long time. Guess I will have to root around in RFB to see what change was made, presumably something in the Commands file.

I'm surprised Duci let players have that much of an advantage.

Check the Data/Menu/menu.txt file. Most messages by the crewmen are written in there.

For instance:

Quote:
810=Ship spotted, sir! Bearing %03d! %s range!
I guess that if you remove the "%s range" part of the sentence, you will not get the range anymore.

ok, found it, it was in the MENU.txt file.

changed line 4616 from:

4616=Nearest visual contact at bearing %03.Of, range %. Of %s!

to

4616=Nearest visual contact at bearing %03.Of!

now I only get the bearing and not the range. Its already that way in RFB.

Thanks everyone.

I wouldn't mind getting a range, if it was in yards and not feet, and if the range was +/- 20%. An exact footage to the target is a bit much. +/- a degree might be nice, too.

Thanks for the info! Same thing has been bothering me in SH 5, I think this method works for that game too!

Yep, it would be even nicer to get estimated range, or close, medium, long range, but I guess that's impossible???
