Took the boy to Newcastle Airport this morning to start his journey to Seattle. He is joining his latest vessel Oosterdam prior to a cruise to Alaska and will be home again in four weeks.

Apparently, the company are short of a senior deck officer in the short term due to some unforeseen circumstances and James is happy to oblige, thus enabling him to get the required sea time in to sit his Masters as quickly as possible.

Talking to the boy this morning and he informs me that he brought his first oil rig into port yesterday, a change from the usual cargo ship, liner or oil tanker etc.

Just last week the winds were so strong that fourteen vessels had to ride the conditions out overnight, being unable to safely enter the port but he informs me that is not unusual for this time of the year.

ie: "good piloting" is ofttimes... NOT piloting!

I still recall the veteran pilot who was lost clambering aboard his vessel off SF's "hell's gate" outside the Golden Gate...and never found.

Yes, there are times when it is dangerous and probably most when transferring from Pilot boat to vessel requiring assistance.
