Hey all, been a long time since I've posted here.
I recently came into some free time and I'm feeling the Uboot itch once again. So, naturally I reinstalled SHIII and DL'd GWX 3.0....to find that it won't work on my new Windows 7 rig...well, at least not without some shady-sounding workarounds. So I pull up Steam and find SH5; but as my clicker hovers over the "buy now!" option, I decide to come to the experts and ask: "is this thing worth it?" I've heard a lot of complaints about SH's newest installment...is there anything like GWX, RUB, RFB, or TM yet for this thing? Thanks! Regards. - Radtgaeb

Don't get the Steam one! You can buy a disc-copy for about £5 on Amazon, don't think you can use the exe patcher with the Steam version.
Yes it's worth it. It needs a lot of mods, but it's worth it. Have a look at Trevally's recent 'Spy Mission OHII' thread (in this forum) for some screens and an example of one of the newer campaign missions. ![]() |

Launcher connects to Ubi servers at start up, but that's it now. The servers do occasionally go down for a few hours, but this is something that's happened only rarely in the time I've had the game.
On those occasions, I go back to SH4 ![]() |

I just wish I had a dollar for every thread started asking that question. All it takes is one quick scan of the first page to see that many many people are enjoying SH5 at this point.

definately dont get the steam version! Buy the game through SUBSIM! You get a disc that can be .exe patched and help support the site.

Ok, so many stability and gameplay questions. I've searched all I can on the topic, but nothing really satisfies my questions; so sorry for redundancies:
I got the game, and.... 1) My Ubisoft Game Launcher Client *cough*joke*cough* WILL NOT update. I've installed, re-installed, rebooted, cleared registries and it just will not cooperate. What am I doing wrong? It keeps telling me that "The update process has failed." Now, I just installed today so I'm wondering if this has something to do with the fact that I read on the forum that some guys are having issues connecting to the servers. Possibility. 2) What's with the missions? Is the first mission like...training? Is this supposed to be CoD in a sub? I'm not complaining - I think this actually could be really cool if done well; I'm just really thrown off....is this game still dynamic campaign or am I going to have to seek out mods? 3) I CTD'd during the first mission. Could be a client issue. Also, I'm a little thrown off by the "online sync" function. 4) I'd guess I'd just like a list of mods that would put me closest to SHIII. I've spent a lot of time with fleet boats and I'm ready to go back to some U Boat action like I had with GWX. Wow. Sorry for being such a noob to this game; but this is so unlike SHIII and IV. Thanks in advance!

2. Yes, the first mission is training. Follow the instructions, shoot the ships/fire four torpedoes and plot a return course to Kiel. Around 50% of the UI and various Uboat functionalities are disabled during this tutorial so don't be surprised because you can't access your sonar operator. Just do the job, get back to Kiel and let the campaign begin, then you get your toys. *Note: if you ever move straight from the bunker to the boat with no loading screen (at any point in the campaign), save and reload before proceeding or you will experience CTDs. 3. Could be a memory issue, could be a mod issue (you must complete the tutorial BEFORE installing any mods), could be any number of things. Could just be a stock bug. You can turn off the online sync in the Ubisoft launcher (options, top right), and it's recommended to do so to avoid save corruption (which may still happen anyway). You'll still get the message on game load regardless. 4. There's a list of 'essential' mods in my sig - google them or search the subsim mod forum. You will want TDWs exe patcher (for the hydrophone fix) and the D3D antilag (for better fps), both of which are also linked in my sig. Sober & Mia also have good lists. Browse the mod forums, see what you fancy. There are no modded extra uboats yet, but plenty of other stuff. For other general stuff as well as minor install problems, you could do worse than read through this recent thread asking many similar questions: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=187902 ![]() |
