Default So, is it worth buying now?

The game got poor reviews at release, but I know what mods can do - in some cases. Some games are beyond all help; as they say, you can't polish a turd.

So, is the game worth getting now - are there mods out there that make it worth it, at least on a par with Silent Hunter 4? And have Ubi removed the retarded 'always online' DRM? Because for me, that is a great big dealbreaker, regardless of how good the game is.

For the price you can buy the game at and with the mods that have come out, its definitely worth buying. They have also patched the game so you don't have to be connected to the internet to play (i.e. no DRM)

OK, thanks for that - the removal of the dumb DRM measures was a must for me to consider the game. So, how would you say it's different to Silent Hunter 4?

And how will it run on that? Silent Hunter 4 ran nicely when I had it - and that was before that upgrade.

GPU may struggle a little bit but the rest of your specs look decent. I upgraded my GPU for this game to a Nvidia 460 something or other. My CPU is similar to your C2D 2.66ghz. It runs fine on my machine.

I overclocked my i5 quad core 2.6 to 3.2 using the stock cooler . Using intel speedstep though . Nothing has blown up yet .

You are at least the third person this month to ask that question, and certainly not the first to employ that retarded comparison.

If you bothered to read the threads you would know that people have been enjoying the game for more than a year, thanks to the mods you're just now asking about.

Again, if you bothered to pay attention you would know that the DRM has been gone for several months.

It sounds less like you really care about the condition of the game than you just want to whine and stir up trouble.

Or maybe I've been away for ages and forgot to search before posting (shoot me). Besides which, it is not a 'retarded comparison'. Some games are crap and that's an end of it - no amount of modding can help. I never said that this is one of them.

Good points. Still, I'll stand by my belief that the phrase "polishing a turd" is retarded. My fault for having standards that others don't see. I look at these boards every day, so I'm aware of all the people who ask the same questions, and for me it gets old. Maybe that's my fault.

As for the game itself, there are specific points that keep me from playing it, beside the fact that my computer won't run it. The sticking points for me are things like the so-called RPG elements. Having the same conversation over and over and over is not immersive for me. Also there is the fact that after two years There is still no Type II boat and a very limited number of merchant types. I still support the idea that once those problems are solved the game will truly shine, but until they are I will continue to play SH3. Even SH4 hasn't had the development it should.

All that said, there are many people who love it as it is, and my dislikes are not theirs and those things don't bother them. The game has seen massive improvements, the DRM is long gone, and if your PC will run it properly it is well worth the tiny price it costs these days.

Or even bothered to read the first page of the board. If you had, you would have caught these four threads:

Oh, and welcome back. First round's on you.

@Sailor Steve and Takeda Shingen:

I'm disappointed at what I saw here in this thread. Was it really necessary to rip this guy a new one for asking his question (and his harmless turd reference) when you could have simply answered his question (God forbid, that that happens in a forum, eh?), or directed him to the threads Takeda mentioned, but without the snide comments about not bothering to look at the first page of the board? Honestly, aside from the ".. what mods do I need?" thread, are the titles of those other threads that definitive that anyone is going to know exactly what they are about or that they relate to what GatorSub1942 wanted to know? It's not like anything similar jumps out at a quick glance.

Both of you have Subsim badges with your avatars - one of you is part of the "Subsim Welcome" team, and the other a moderator. You should have shown your status and lead by example by being more welcoming, helpful, and/or encouraging, rather than what you displayed here. You didn't rip strips off those other four guys in the other four threads, and I can't see any strong enough reason to do it to GatorSub1942 in this one.

He's made 20 posts in five years, and there's nothing wrong with that. A scolding like the one he got, and we may see less of him, if we see him again at all. I wouldn't be surprised if other noobs or lurkers read this thread and are afraid to come out and post at all now.

.. that's my two cents

p.s. Not all of us read these forums every day, or every thread in them, enough so that we know of every piece of news or change. DRM has been gone for a while now, and I just happened to stumble over that news a little while ago, myself. That's just the way it is. No big deal. We should be happy to get people (back into) playing this game, instead of chastising them for not being up-to-speed with current events.

When the answer is directly in front of you, and you come out swinging with those old 'polish a turd' and 'retarded DRM' comments, yes one deserves to be straightened out. There is nothing more unhealthy for a community than those that come to poison the well. And if one's intention is not to poison the well, then one should not speak as though that is the intention. If you do, then don't be surprised if the response is not how you like. Or, at the very least, do not expect to be spoon-fed answers that are, again, sitting right in front of you.

As you pointed out, we are all trying to move forward in a healthy manner. The rehashing of the problems of the past is not healthy. Moreso when inflamatory language is used. The other four threads, which you indicated were devoid of my presence, were also devoid of this inherently hostile tone. Act respectfully and you will be treated with respect.

I'm sorry you're disappointed, and I can't say that you're wrong. I did try to be nicer in my second post.

On my own behalf, I have to say that I get tired of answering the same questions over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

When I go to a new forum looking for answers the first thing I do is look around to see what's up, only asking question about things I absolutely can't find answers for. In this case it doesn't take much looking as the answers are all on the first page and easy to find. We've even had people say right up front that they can't be bothered to look for themselves. Is that interest, or is that laziness? All I ask is that someone at least try. Don't bother to go that far and you get an answer like the one I gave.

And Takeda pointed out that all the answers were right there. I try to be nice to new people, but if you've been here longer than the game has been out the I think not bothering to look first is just being lazy, and deserves a rude answer.

I'm probably wrong, but then I usually am.
