Default GW Mod installation problem

Win 7 -64Bit
6950 2Gbx2 CrossFire
Xonar STX
Steam 1.4ver Silent Hunter 3.

No matter what I do, I can NOT install GWMod on my system. I keep getting a warning of there being a modification on my system and the program will not install. This is a fresh new installation, after installing, de-installing, but still get the "mod" warning telling me that GW mod can only be installed in a clean system.

*edit* I'm able to play the game ok, so the usual Win7 errors do not apply or at least I dont think they apply to this problem.

Is there something I can do to fix this?

If you are uninstalling/reinstalling the game prior to the GWX installation attempt, run some type of registry cleaner after the uninstall. Hopefully this will remove any leftover entries in the registry from the old installation and then you get a *really* clean new installation. You may also want to delete whatever folder was created in your Documents folder so that the new installation can recreate a fresh version of that. You won't be able to play any of your old saves/careers once you install GWX over top of the game anyway.

Is the game installation located in a Programs directory? Win7 can be very protective about files/folders located in the Programs directories, as a way of preventing malware etc. from making unwanted changes to programs you already have installed, and/or preventing tech-challenged users from going in there and screwing up or deleting stuff that they shouldn't be messing with.

Good advice for playing SH3 on Win7 is to install the game in another location on your system, a folder that you've created somewhere outside the Program directories. It makes modding the game a whole lot easier.

OTOH if you're playing through Steam and have already got Steam in the Programs folder with a whole bunch of other stuff installed there, it's not like just reinstalling SH3 somewhere else is a quick fix.

Do you have UAC turned off? (User Account Control)

If it's turned on it may also interfere with attempts to modify files located in the Programs folders.

I run my OS on a small 120 SSD, everything else is on my 1T HDD, so steam is NOT installed under "programs". I have a separate folder for games, in which I installed steam under. Being the computer nerd taht I am, I tood UAC off with in 30 secs of installing the OS, so that is also not a factor.

Didnt run ccleaner after uninstalling from steam, but will do that next.

Vielen Dank für Ihre Hilfe Frau Kaleun.

No problem, you seem to have most of the usual bases already covered. If the uninstall/registry clean/reinstall doesn't work, let us know where you're at after that. A lot of people here are playing GWX on Win7 and there are a lot of Steam users as well so we'll get you sorted one way or the other.

Steam?

Edit. I see it now. Yes steam.

Tell the gwx installer the correct location of the sh3.exe file. Not the default one.

Ooh, good one and could very well be the problem. I never would've thought of it because I have Steam but don't use it for SH3. So that particular issue just never pops into my head at all.

What registry cleaner is good to use?

My problem with GWX is that for some reason I have 0 deck gun ammo. I had the Extra ammo mod installed, but even when I did a fresh install of SH3 and GWX, I still had no ammo. 2 fresh installs ago I had ammo, but not anymore. I guess I need to do another uninstall, then clean the registry, and do another fresh install of both SH3, GWX, and SH3 Commander.
