Default Screeching graphics card

In DW I'm getting screeching sounds comming from the graphics card at certain view stations.I have the x850xt ATI card running the latest drivers. It seems to do this when encountering 16 bit graphics?32 bit seems to make the screeching go away.Anyone have an answer for this one,and more importantly is this something thats damaging the card?Cause MAN IT HOWELS!!

Hi Raven

This is an old issue with Dw, that some people experience. Including myself. I have tried two Nvidia cards (6800Gt & 7900Gtx) with Dw and both of them make noise in the 2d stations. It is gone when switching to 3d. There was a thread about this sometime during 2006 and Jamie one of the developers did answer. They had asked some questions to Nvidida, but I'm not sure any definitive answers about this issue ever came. So the issue lives on... some people suffer more from it than others.

Cheers Porphy

Well,I dunno if this will help anybody but the same thing happens in other games running 16 bit,the difference is however that when I switch to a different desktop bit depth,it goes away.NOT SO in DW though,it still screeches.

Strange thing is...SUB COMMAND doesn't make the screeching noise at all??

I don't know if this screeching is related to the graphics card but I had a similar problem and it was linked to the mouse.
I used to use the mouse (optical mouse, no led, laser one) in "hardware mode" in dw and would get a high pitch during during gameplay.
Realised that by enabling "software mode" for the mouse would eliminate that high pitch sound.

Well, that is still related more to graphic card than to mouse, because the "hardware mode" or "software mode" is just way the cursor is drawn by the graphic card (not that it matters in our case anyway) But thanks, i will try it

Maybe it has already been said before, I couldn't find it in the other threads. I haven't experienced it myself but if you could try the following:

Since the gfx card is responsible for the "refresh-rate" of the screen. It will draw the screen again and again with usually 60Hz or more. Now, with the most newer screens being TFT/LCD this refreh rate isn't needed as the TFT/LCD displays use a different refresh-system.

One might try to increase/decrease the refresh-rate of the card to see if it helps.

I hope it does, other than that, squeeling is usually produced by a coil or Opamp which is resonating due to some kind of feedback or frequency.
