Thanks Canovaro I really must give that a go. So far I've still not manually operated the hydrophone!

Is there a point when using magnetics becomes less of a risk? I've always thought that by late 1940 they stopped going off early in poor weather as often.
Anyone else find that to be the case or am I kidding myself? |

In RL it was not until Jan42 that the torpedo problems were resolved. I wait till at least then before I start trusting magnetics

I've found that around late '41 you can get reasonable results with magnetics, but you have to be careful about depths. In really heavy weather this can be a problem as the waves will most likely cause you to either under do the depth settings and you will end up with prematures. I almost never use magnetics in wind speeds over 10 km per sec.

I'm using it with GWX1.03. Dozen or so patrols so far with no issues.
Using the random settings and it seems a lot better.

Well, according to my personal experience,I think the ideal weather for attacking convoys is - "Little storm and little or no fog".You are less visible when moving on the periscope depth with raised periscope, everything you got to be afraid of - are the radar or sonar detections.Attacks should be done in cloudy weather at night.
Sunshine and full moon with calm sea spoil all hunting. |

Thought Bad wheater can get you easier inside the convoy then cristal clear water,
you should be happy with it actually I know I am as I managed to sink an aircraft carier in heavy wheather UNNOTICED by any of the Escorts. (the aircraftcarier was in middle of a Convoy)

When there is,so to say "moderately" bad weather, which is supposed to mean bad weather but with normal visibility, you are free enough to pick up the most valuable targets.I like the waves,as they cover the periscope reducing detection posibilities.

I was searching last night for a convoy at night in terrible weather. I finally found it. When the battleship in the convoy ran over the bow of my sub!

At least you didn't get taken out by a non-combat ship.
