Girl racer in Formula One?

F1 plans for a new "sensation": it is considered to get Danica Patrick into the cockpit - and not just for testing, but racing. She is a known and competitive race driver in the American Indycar league (with midfield and some top places, and one win, trend over the past four years pointing upwards), and the fourth woman ever to qualify for the Indy 500 (where she was amongst the leading top but then had to reduce speed when running short on fuel). Don't tell me she can't bite.

And also don't tell me she doesn't look nice!

Good or bad? Can she handle it, or not? Is it just an advertising coup to get a female face onto the the posters for F1, or is it a real sports decision?

I personally have nothing against it as long as she really is qualified for formula one, and is not just being used for F1 advertizing (and does not drive as mad as Montoya

)

As long as the racer is competent and competitive they might as well be the hunchback of Notre Dame for all I care. But looking great is not a bad bonus

I don't know. She has done OK in Indy but hasn't set it alight. I don't think she would last 5 minutes in F1 though she might surprise.

Yes, definitly naked!

Also, on some parts of the track, there would be speedbumps installed. And lastly, the cockpit cameras would need to be strenghtened, we wouldnt want them to break.

Oh yeh, and a slow-mo replay of the drivers driving over the speedbumps would be nice too... preferably from the cockpit cam. :hmm:

Since she's what got me back into actually watching car races, I want her to stay Indy, as it's much easier to watch Indy over here.

She won't be the first. In the 1950s there was Maria Theresa de Filipis and the '70s saw Lella Lombardi, both from Italy. There have been others more recently, but the greatest female driver to compete in Grands Prix did so before Formula 1 was created. Eliška Junková, known in the west as Elisabeth Junek, was a highly successful driver in the 1920s, quitting racing after her husband was killed in a GP accident.
