If anyone else has been tuned into this thread, this page seems handy for figuring out where to start when looking for a power supply. For a 4600+ system with two sticks of DDR2, an x1950 PRO, a SATA drive, a DVD-ROM drive and combo rewriter, a PCI NIC, and a couple of fans all at peak usage, it recommended something between 400 and 450 watts. |

As it has been said before, the aperage of the 12v rail/rails is more important that the wattage. Anyway psu's you most deffinately want to steer clear of are Codegen and ColorsIT, absolutely worthless pieces of crap. Allso it is great to have a PSU with surplus due to component aging, which is faster when the psu is operating closer to peak output, the psu's actualy capablities diminish quite a bit.

Just an update... I think I've got a shopping list finally hammered out:
EVGA E-GEFORCE 8600GT Ssc Edition 684MHZ 256MB DDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I HDTV Out DIRECTX10 Video Card Corsair CMPSU-450VX 450W ATX 12V 33A 24PIN ATX Power Supply Active PFC 120MM Fan Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400 2GB 2X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 240PIN Dual Channel Memory Kit Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 160GB Hard Drive SATA2 7200RPM 11MS 8MB Cache 5YR MFR Warranty AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ Dual Core Processor Socket AM2 Windsor 2.4GHZ 2X512KB 89W 90NM Retail Box MSI K9NU NEO-V ATX ULI M1697 AM2 DDR2 PCI-E16 1PCI-E1 3PCI SATA2 RAID Sound LAN Motherboard Not bleeding edge but it's a good upgrade I think for someone like me still using an AMD 2500+ with 512mb RAM and a Radeon 9600 PRO. For $587 taxes and shipping included with $30 in mail-in rebates I think this is a good deal. |

If I may:
At this point in time, your best bet for graphics cards are either the 8800GT or ATi's 3870. If you don't have the cash, I would still recommend the 3850 over the 8600.

I'd allso recomend you look at Intel for your processor, a 6300 or 6400 should be more than cheap ennough while offering better performance and a motherboard with similar features in the same price range should allso be fairly easy to find.
Anyway to anyone who said that an AMD 4000+ isnt bottlenecked by single channel ddr pc3200 ram, you are mistaken. When it comes to the s939 platform A64 processors utilize about 90% of the theoretically available bandwithin dual channel mode which is about as far as it can be pushed 8ofcourse this is dependant on the aplication you run but as this figure shows the memory bandwith is indeed a bottleneck in some cases), while the bandwith utilization isnt quite that high with DDR2 yet it will be reached more than soon ennough. |
