If I'm not going to be in front of the computer for the entire voyage I don't see what the point of 1x is. Playing with the kids while the computer runs is hardly more realistic than using a little time compression.

My first 1x patrol took 7 days game time not sure how many days my time shut it down at bedtime for 8 hours or so per day so do the math

IT'S probly close to 1 carreer using tc = 1 patrol at 1x
1 carreer using TC = 1 patrol at 1x???

When playing dead is dead maybe, or starting late in the war, but starting at 1939, I think it's more like 4 or 5 patrols at 1x. Atleast I wasn't able to play a carreer from the start in 9 days...

I know the feeling at 1x and have been enjoying it whilst I am unemployed (my free preview of being a stay-at-home dad). I still use a bit of tc, usually up to 64x in dead zones to keep up the pace since I play other games and have been spending time cooking and on some home refinishing projects (can't run out to hit the Big C when you are painting!).

Codmander, have you thought about a patrol blog? I've been having a blast writing mine as I cruise around the Atlantic. I find that it takes the edge off of being home alone and adds to the immersion. Heck, you could do hourly updates!

Mr MOM
BLOG? heard of them but no I dont have a proper log yet. Kresge I hope your sending your wife out to work? Mine does double shifts lol 16 hours from wilhelmshaven the Crew can see some birds and the hint of land on the southerly breeze. no tc here at all and this is the hardest part where I can see being tempted to use it . But I am too close now once In port after the partys I will work on a logbook before my next patrol

If i am away from my pc for any length of time i just sumerge at 30 meters at slow speed till I get back

nice read Kresge yea somthin like that would be nice

I tried doing a patrol/career not using tc.. but I couldn't do it. Had to use tc to help it along. I thought I was a hardcore sub-simmer.. but I was no where near

I didn't think anyone would have the patience to play without tc.. but I have to salute you guys for getting the best out of a game. If you can call it a game anymore.

My faith in being a true simmer is restored I've given myself the task of learning the TDC and manual contact tracking etc... so I'll have time to practice while I'm trucking along. And you know the funny thing is I've never thought of Alt-Tabbing and surfing the net while playing.

I think there should be a 1x thread.. sounds like there is a Club 1X growing here

Should there be a 1x thread? Yup, I think so, mate. It's a completely different game and less arcadish on 1x. I've toyed with 1x patrols before but three days ago I started my first one just to see what it's like and so far I'm loving it, especially with the GWX mod.

My days are nights for my sailors. That way I can monitor them as they diesel around on the surface and do a hydrophone check a noon my time (midnight theirs). At night when I go to bed I put them down deep and let them run.

I realize I'm not the first Kaluen to do this. I'm just saying I'm doing it for the first time and so far am LOVING it.

But, yeah, you have to be kinda goofy in the head to play 1x....I agree with that part!

A few more thoughts on 1x:

One thing for sure you gotta run the game in the background. I don't know anyone who plays 1x and sits there in front of the monitor 24/7. (And if you do you need to be insitutionalized.)

OTOH, it's not that hard playing 1x and it really gets you to thinking when you pick up a contact and start following it. You pay more attention and think through the problem more than "I'll run a ahead a bit and cap him as he sails by." You pay attention to everything on 1x: weather, convoy routes, bases, planes, etc. I find it very cool and very very nerve wracking.

Someone mentioned it's not realistic to play with the kids while running 1x. Well, yeah. But then again if I do get killed in game I don't take a .38 and spatter my medulla oblongata all over the wallpaper like a grisly Rorschach Test, either. Just for realism.

There was a Kaluen on these forums I believe (I wish I could remember his name so as to credit him) who said something along the lines of "TC is for gamers, 1x is for captains."

And the more I play 1x the more I kind of think he might be right.

I dunno if I'll stick with 1x forever. But I am loving it now. Just me, I guess.

And if you pick up a contact just as you're leaving for work?

I still don't get it; if you're not in front of the monitor 24/7 then 1x is no more realistic than TCing to catch up time lost when the computer was off.

WELCOME TO THE REAL SILENT HUNTER 3 I dont know seems when theres nothin happening and your on/in an area thats dull I find the game relaxing I 'll sit for an hour on watch , than come here type somthin, than watch tv or do whatever -but when in waters not so friendly you really need to be on it 10 times as many aircraft spotted(((may not all attack but WO see's em sound contac 10 fold more which means more action-------lets put it like this you miss too much tc'in -even convoys---NOOBISH-- Watching BLACK DOT SOME LINES AND A SQUARES IN THE MAP ROOM MIGHT AS WELL PLAY PONG-- --to use tc it should be banned from the game

PS just because you play 1x does not mean sitting in front of your pc 24/7 ((allthough I have been latly - sorry to say this wont last)) so you went ten miles save n quit and pick it back up 2 days later or tc cross an ocean missin ships planes and who knows what else
1x mods last longer also--

I got the watch see ya later u45 --out

Attention all 1x Subsimmers...

I've bought a baby monitor so I can go throughout the rest of my sub (house) and take care of day to day things like cleaning and doing the dishes.

IT WORKS PERFECTLY!!! If my crew spots something... I come dashing in and take care of business.

(Just hide it when friends come over... They WILL NOT understand.)

You can get a lot of reading in as well.

When all of the GWX modding stops... and we go on to other things... You will find me somewhere on a 1x TC patrol... playing DiD at 100% realism as allowed by the game.

Though I do allow for such things as showers and the like. Also... Real depth charges are not allowed in the house.

Yes I am barking mad. Deal with it.

No, watching TV is not realistic. But then again neither is sitting in an air conditioned room drinking soda and eating french fries while you chat with your girlfriend on the phone with SH3 zippiing along at 1024x, LOL.

1x gives a whole new dimension to the game, I think is what a lot of us are saying. And it really does. I'm 50km NE of Hartlepool. I got a DD sound contact to the SE, a long ways off. I came up to recharge and my crew spotted what looked like a rowboat off to the W. In the old days I would have machinegunned said rowboat running the risk of having it radio the DD. In 1X? I stealthily snuck off to the NW into the dark. I wasn't about to call down a DD just for taking out what looked like a fancy rowboat of 110 tons. I'll wait for better game, thank you.

Now that's immersion. Or at least it is to me. And that's what I like.

I still maintain I may not stay with 1x forever. But the days of me warping around the Atlantic missing tons of contacts are OVER. Again, just me.

And of course you can save and come back later if need be. (Would that the real U-boat commanders had this option.)
