Regarding the shape of the "lens" - I spent a lot of time looking for old photos of the exterior of the lens of the sky periscope. Everything I found showed it was a vertical ellipse/oval. Although I guess to be honest, since the eyepiece was round, your view should be round and the advantage is that as you twist the handles you're changing the angle of the bottom mirror inside the scope, and therefore changing which part of the "oval" you're looking out of. However... I like this shape

I have GWX 1.03 installed so I used the file (periscope.tga) from that. Is that the correct one?
Image edited and uploading to my filefront account now.......

I believe so. If not it is a simple thing to rename it to be compliant.

Regarding the shape... you are correct. However, as opposed to the standard game, the new shape will at least make it immediately and obviously different when using the obs scope.

Someone test it out real quick so that I know it's ok and I didn't screw it up!

oops, just noticed that you're going to have to rename the file...sorry!!

LOL, maybe so... assuming it passes the crew's inspection. Don't make me swear to it.

However, if it does pass inspection and is included, we are happy to credit all involved.

Will DL and try to get back with you in about an hour. Will need to edit some things and fire it all up.

No worries. I have to edit two 1024 Cfg files to make it work correctly anyway... and build the correct file structures. One way or another we'll get it working. (I think LOL.)

Will keep you posted. Working on it now.

this gives me time to try and add a 'glassy' look to the recticle then. dmlavan's recticle is blank in the basically rectangular area of the glass. I'm playing with photoshop to see what I can come up with.......

Okay... well we are getting somewhere. No worries. Will add the red mask entries after a peanut butter and jelly break.

great news! I didn't screw up anything.....wow, that's the first time I made an edit to something correctly the first time...

Ok let me bounce this off of you. In the old style (GWX and vanilla SH3) the lens that you're looking through has a 'water coating' on it to make it look like water is running down it. Should we add this to this? I might not have that done until later tomorrow (err today..lol)

Well, to be honest, I always thought of that as being smudges on the interior of the lens... or oil from all those burning tankers lol.

I think yes... adding just a bit... in an inconspicuous place or two may look good. (as long as it doesn't interfere with the player use of the scope.)

Gonna install dmlaven's redmask entries now.

I see a problem with this new scope......you lose you magnification level text on the left side of the scope....no biggie, simple little menu_1024_768 edit will take care of this.
