Actually Ubisoft released an official 'NO CD/NO Starforce' patch a couple of years ago.

The option I chose was to buy a new copy. Anything released after 2008 already comes that way, and they are very cheap nowadays.

You recommend creating a new directory (instead of default) to install to.

I have done this, yet despite creating on (in my case Vista machine: C:\Ubi\ SH 3) When the installation started, the install went DIRECTLY to the default drive; C:\Progam Files(x86)\Ubisoft\SH III .

I had to cut and paste from that drive to the one I specified. Everything is working perfectly, but despite designating and "directing" the installl to go to a specific (NON-Program files) folder, that is where everything went to during the install.

How do you circumvent this process?

Thank you.
Cutting and pasting on a newer OS, ... OUCH !!!
And I have to say if it's running for you, something got screwed up along the way and you are very, very lucky.
Let me explain; The newer OS's (from Windows 98 and newer I believe) have a registry. Now Windows 98 was a very basic registry and many programs could be manipulated after the install. I say manipulated in the way of cutting and pasting to different directories.
Windows XP, Vista, 7, ... the registries for these OS's are rather bloated and somewhat difficult to work with. Cutting and pasting to different directories would not allow the program to run because the registry which now controls all the DLL's and drivers and such for the program are pointed to the original install directory. Again, with the security measures now in the newer OS's, when it would recognize something has been moved from the original directory, the OS would simply mark the program as unusable and suggest the user to reinstall.
One of the reasons most programs (at least up to Vista & 7) would always ask the user to reboot the machine before running the program was to 'set' the directory, DLL's, and drivers to their place of install. With Vista and 7, a reboot is still needed to 'set' the information to the registry, but if you simply run the program right after an install, the OS writes other information to the registry which 'sets' the install information.
One of the reasons behind the registry and the security measures mentioned earlier was that someone could install a program, then grab all the files from the install and create a rough program disk to basically pirate the software. It's also designed to protect your OS from viruses and malware.

When running an install from a disk or downloaded EXE from a reputable source, there will always be an option for a specific directory install. Sometimes just before the install the setup manager asks the user if the following directory is acceptable (you can type in a new directory in the path box), and sometimes the install directory can only be adjusted when the user picks an "Advanced Install" option or, in the install dialog box - in the upper right corner - a button for creating a new directory. These options depend on the program and the maker essencially as each piece of software is different.
It's been 5 years since I installed SHIII so I don't remember off-hand what type of install it offers, but I know the option is there.

Default @SailorSteve

That may have been the case, but, nobody hosting the nodvd file now will give it away without signing up for thier crap....runs about 9.99. Since I just found a copy of SH3 w/sh2 free for 6.99 on amazon , I will consider the problem solved. Although, that stubborn side of me considers it to be 'givingup', meh, all I really want is to play the game. My old copy is plenty scuffed up, anyhow... thanks for your help

That's exactly what I was suggesting. I hope you used the link at the bottom of this page so Subsim got a cut.

Spent a good hour last night hunting down the NoDVD file. Had to go thru some pretty sketchy sites. Ended up on some russian site, but I found it.
SO!!!
if anyone else needs the file, PM me and I can send you a link to where I've personally put it up online. We shouldn't hafta be digging around in shady download sites to find this file. =]
=D
.. all these years, and it's still the "official fix" for the problem, yet we STILL can't openly link to it.

EDIT: Of course, i haven't actually done my Win 7 install yet. I plan on doing that today, shortly here. You can assume everything went fine unless I say otherwise

EDIT EDIT: I'm one of those bullheaded guys who stubbornly refuses to buy a newer copy of SH3. I bought mine early, and thus paid full price. I'll be verdammt if I'm gonna shell out more money for a game I already own just to get a SF free version <grrrr> For me, it would quite literally be a choice between buying another copy of a game I already own, or buying SH4, which I've wanted for years and years now. :P

I just installed SH3 on my windows 7 Ultimate computer. When click on the short cut to run the game, I get a window that pops up and says the driver was installed correctly and that I have to restart the computer for it work, alas this does not fix the issue.

W7 does not like Starforce, you can find the removal tool here:

I've got SH3 1.4b with GWX 3.0 running great. I'm trying to use the resolution fix mod so I can enjoy the game at a nice resolution.

I install the mod and get the config file to my native res 1600x900 but now when running the game it goes to a black full screen and freezes there until I get out via task manager.

Anyone else have this problem and have a solution?

I'm running W7 64 on a laptop with a ATI card.

I'll repeat that, DO NOT install to the default directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\ ...

Windows 7 (any bit), Windows Vista (any bit), Windows XP (64 bit), etc ...
These are designed with security measures. If you install a program like this one (SHIII with all the mods), you cannot get it to run because the mods and patches and such are designed to update files in the game directory. If you are using the "Program Files (x86)" directory, these security measure in the Windows OS's are designed to block the files from being edited and manipulated by the mods from SHIII and thus, the game will not run. If you only want to run vanilla SHIII (without any mods, updates, patches, and a generic resolution), then by all means, use the "C:\Program Files (x86)\ ... default installation.

Best suggestion is to create a custom folder for your install of SHIII.
I use "C:\Program Games\ ..." . This way Windows does not automatically block any files from being edited and manipulated by the mods and patches I put in it.

I believe a lot of the errors people are posting are because of the 'security measures' put in place by Microsoft on these newer OS's.

And another think regarding resolutions for those with the larger screens and best video cards; there are mods here in the forum for high resolution screens. See this one for a great example http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=196400
The third post from Brett25 will give you an excellent place to start for getting the game to run on a high resolution. You will have to search around for all the mods to get everything looking proper on the screen, but it's worth it.

Frau Kaleun mentioned earlier and it's worth mentioning again, take your time and go one step at a time. Make sure the vanilla is working properly first before you start putting updates and patches, mods and customizations to it all. Otherwise, you spend twice as much time and still have to go step by step.

Good luck to you all.
THANKS M8 worked great allthough i tryed- programfile- didnt work was just like programfile(x86) but on --f NEWvolume -- works awesome actullty the best in years with gwx widescreen THANKS ALL
