Default Problems 1. sinking destroyers 2. Identifying Neutrals

PLaying the GW mod and having a blast but am experience 2 types of difficulty and was hoping someone might be able to assist.

1. I'm in 1941 and cannot for the life of me sink (with a torp) a destroyer. Even if I wait till they get to the minimum effect distance of 300m, they still have time to turn and weave out of the way. HOwever I can sink them (and am quite good at it ) with the deck gun. Any tips on how to sink with torps (once they've noticed you) would be greatly appreciated.

2. I came across a hospital ship and troop transport just off the english channel (about 30K to the west of it) but didnt realise they were neutral until they sunk leaving 2 green sunk icons on the map instead of red ones. How can you tell if a ship is neutral and even more surprisingly why did my renown shoot up by 6000??!!! (I thought it would be zero or slightly negative).

3. Is it just me or does it take a lot more torps to sink ships in the GW mod than it did previously (unmodded). If I can sink just a regular cargo ship with 3 torps thats a good effort. Or perhaps I am doing something wrong. Any tips?
