Its the same story no matter where you are, we have set rules for basildon council, and then the unwritten rules.

We have three types of bags four types of collection you have white bags green waste these are special bio degradeable bags, pink bags for recycling, black for general waste and the box for glass.

If im on the pink bags (my normal route) i can only take the bag, if there is no contaminants in it, marked clearly on the bag in big black letters is the word NO POLYSTYRENE yet it amazes me to find several bags full of the stuff and when im putting the stickers on them the residents are saying what have i done wrong this week.

Now a few weeks back some resident wound me up chronic, do you think i collected his bags today? oh heck no ! i got my knife picked them up off the front garden slit them tipped the contents over the front garden and said bag split, it was over his property im not obliged to clean it up.

So here it is this is how many of us work:

Wind us up, piss us off, try telling us our job, attempt to tell us where the stuff goes when you blatently dont know, and we wont collect your bags more to the point you might find that we get nasty enough to either drive the lorry over your front garden or just slit the bags, after all theres alot of cats around here.

the I pay my council tax for you to take my bags all of them and everything else people.

Wel you pay your council tax yes but some one who got realy bored worked it out that we get £6.95 per house hold to come and take your bags and bins, and the rest of your money goes on roads emergency services water pipes ect, so yeah you pay your council takes but only that much gets to us and it doesnt even realy pay one guys wage per hour, (average loader £9.85 average driver £14.40 class 1 that is).
So in reality do you realy think we should put any effort into listning to you ?

If you park your car so we cant get through.

We will sit there for 10 minuets honking our horn we will try and get past but be ware we wont move the head mirrors so if they get ripped off thats not our fault, if you dont have tax on the car then there is nothing stopping us hitting the viachle and moving it out of the way using the lorry afterall its quite tricky reversing the lorry.

People who give us the tips.

We like these people bend over backwards to take things £30 sees the whole lorry through at £10 each we will turn a blind eye to things and just whack the lot on if we can.

So thats the inside world of how we work and yes not just me but 90% of us, so be nice to your dustman afterall we dont have to come and collect your bags

Oh yeah and scrap money not to mention the goodies we flog at cash converters on a weekly basis

Dont laugh lol on a week we can cash in a good £100 between us and if you get the travellers sites not unknown to get a £50 or even more tip for taking a bit more!

So in reality we are good paid dustmen seeing as the city of london pay thiers £5.05 per hour we get on the average £9.85 so we doing some thing right.
