Default Real life U-boat crew clothes question....

Something I've always wondered........why in the hell would one want to wear a leather coat when on any ship, let alone a sub ?

Cold, clammy leather.....yeah, that's what I'd want in the North Atlantic

Anyway, anyone have any info. on why this was used, instead of say, oilskin ?

Leather is stylish of course! and because with fur on the inside its very very warm and leather lasts a long time.
