Default BDU War Diary

Just came across this site which I think has some fascinating reading. It's an English translation of the War diary of BDU and covers the period 15 Aug 1939 through 15 Jan 1945.

I love the first entry for 15/8/39:

"Telephone call from Supreme Command of the Navy (Lieut.(s.g.) Fraesdorf) saying that the officers' party for U-boat officers was to be on Saturday 19.8 and as many as possible were to be present. Were there no orders?"

I wonder how many orders for bier, schnapps unt kirsch there were on the 19th. Must have been one of the last parties before the war.

I was amazed that Gunther Prien's return to Wilhelmshave on 17 October 39 doesn't rate a mention in the BDU diary. I guess it was still very hush hush despite the loud bang that went off a few days prior in Scapa.
