Default New World Map for SH3 (+ mods) - preview!

Hi there!

As some of you know, I have been working on the campaign land layer quite a bit for my GW-UA add on mod! During the summer, I have expanded the world map A LOT! Much is still undone, that is war progress! But for you, who want more cities to the world map, this is what is underway:

Improved land campaign: France & Italy (finished), Germany, Poland & West Russia (unfinished)
Improved land campaign: Balkans & East Africa (finished), North Africa (finished)
Improved land campaign: Far East Asia (unfinished)

Preview:

http://carotio.cabspace.com/Carotios...GW-UA1.15b.jpg
http://carotio.cabspace.com/Carotios...GW-UA1.15c.jpg

In other words: the map will show a lot more cities, not only in original colour, but also according to war progress. However, please be patient! It's still summer here, so the work will be done, when different matters permit me to do so. Till then:
HAPPY SUMMER TO EVERYONE!

PS: This campaign layer is part of the GW-UA add on mod, but will, when done be published as a stand-alone mod too for use as a stand-alone mod. It may also be used for free within any other supermod, if my alias name is mentioned in the credit list!

Officially, Germany didn't have a supply base or milk cow there! Neither were there two milk cows for a last escape north of North America (North-West Passage). However, this last escape was attempted by a German u-boat in 1945, carrying two Japanese officers as passengers and a cargo of uranium, which was intended to be brought to Japan. However, the German u-boat was surrendered by the captain to an American destroyer; the Japanese officers commited suicide, whereas the uranium fell into the hands of the Americans. Ironically, this uranium was used by the Americans in the Manhattan Project nuclear bombs dropped over Japan...
And this Secret Base in the Amazon delta was imagined to be a creation of emigrated Germans to South America, which is true. Many Germans emigrating to America in the 18th, 19th and 20th century didn't all go to North America. A lot went to South America as well. So what if those Germans was sympathetic to the German war effort? So this is just a "what if" creation.

For this map, I'm doing, there will be two versions: One "clean" version for the super-realism freaks, and one "what if" version (for GW-UA) for simple gamers like me! So rest assured, you can get your realistic version too!

For the map progress: I have nearly finished the German expansion into Russia. Then it goes back again... A few Westfront cities needs some corrections too! When this is done, then Europe, Africa, N&S America and Australia are complete; or as good as! One can always find minor adjustments... Westasia is done too, but Eastasia (=China) and Southeast Asia needs work too... Need to find some good material about the war progress there...

Wasnt knocking your work caritio and am in no way a realism freak just thought I should bring it up
This was actually asked in another thread by someone else which is why I found the answer
In the same thread it was found one of the Spanish islands on your map is allied when it should be neutral and one of the Norwegian ports close to Denmark had the dates all messed
The last change to Allied starts on the right date but the end date goes back in time to 1940 :rotfl:
Cant remember which one offhand now will try to find the thread for you
Not saying that Norway port is your fault it may be like that originally

Awesome. Just awesome.

Two questions:
  1. How will it affect performance?
  2. How will it affect game-play? It seems to me that if you are on the coast of Germany, you'll be able to dock "anywhere". Not necessarily a bad thing, of course.
But yes, it is really great. One of the things that got me when I started up my first game of Real U-boat (I think - though now I use Grey Wolves) was the amount of cities included. Not just ports, but in-land cities.

Heh, for the last two missions I created, both of which take place in Norwegian fjords, I've added all the towns and cities on the shores of that particular fjord (thanks to Google Earth:p). It adds so much to reality.

Please post a link for that thread, before I can give any full reply!

Well, if some ports change colour many times (neutral, axis, allied), then maybe its because i have found material about the subject!

The portugese Azores and the Spanish Canarian Islands should of course be neutral. But in U-Boat War Ace, there are established allied bases in late war, which I partly seem to remember have heard about before; in order to close the black area in the Atlantic, where the wolves could still hunt in peace without air attack. So this explains it!

I suspect, it may slow performance a little, but not that much, if you think at FPS!
You may of course have more docking options, but that's not my intention of doing this. First, you must know your history: don't dock a place, where battles are nearby, if your docking harbour is captured by allied while in this base, you may experience CTD, besides you don't get new grid coordinates and can't upgrade, so it's just like milk cows... Second, I did it for the "dive deep into the feeling of being living at that time" experience: you can see the war progress, somtimes from day to day, other times from week to week!

Yes, there are really many cities and towns around the world, but trying to add them all .... one would NEVER be finished!!!!! So I just add a percentage of them! I would say, after looking in different atlases of different languages plus war books, I have them placed 80-90% in the right place (SH3 map is not made by Google Earth...), the war progress is 85-95% correct and the change of city names between original and corresponding German names while occupied! All this gives SH3 more atmosphere, I think!

As for Kristiansand I have 3 entries for that port in the stock game

1\1\38 to 8\4\40 as neutral

9\10\40 to 2\5\45 as axis

3\5\45 to 31\1\45 allied ?????

So according to that there are 6 months when it disappears and at the end of the war it goes back in time

Show me your sources for allied airbases on the Azores and the Canary Isles

It probably should be:
9\4\40 to 2\5\45 as axis
3\5\45 to 31\12\45 as allied

St. Nazaire and other French ports used by Germans dissapears from the map too in stock version. Why? Well, probably because these ports weren't used as sub bases as soon as the cities fell into the hands of the Germans...

Interesting reading, my answer above should answer or give my comment to that thread!

If you're thinking at links to websites, then I can't provide you that. I once saw it on a television program and I think I saw it in book once. But when I have documentation for it, then I'll provide it in my readme file...

Well I have to say I owe you an apology on the Azores

08/17 Tue. Army troops enter Messina terminating the campaign in Sicily.
Lipari and Stromboli Islands, north of Sicily, surrender to
United States destroyer and PT boats
Portugal agrees to grant bases in the Azores to Great
Britain.

Right. It's probably to show how they're contested, under repairs, etc.

There should've been a grey colour for that, come to think of it.

I don't think it would be good, it would be confusing with two colours for axis!

However, I would like to change the neutral green, which is hard for me to see, perhaps making it darker green or another clour such as brown, purple, grey or whatever, just that it is darker!
If anyone knows what to do, please say so, it would save me for looking...

My add on is intended for use with GW1.0, because in my GW-UA1.1 plus patches I have included the updates in GW1.1 and GW1.1a 1024 overlay fix.
But I think it should work, though I don't know it...
