How much realism can a newbie take?

Hey folks

I've just started playing SH3 and could really need some help!
I have read through the newbie guide (manual) and will try to get a feel for it, so thats not an issue...yet

What i would like to know is how much realism i should start with.
I like hardcore in sim's, but im afraid to "wear myself out" (i.e: find the game impossible) before i even get familiar with the gameplay...if you get my drift.

any tip will be highly appreciated

thnx

I suppose that you play un-modded SHIII? I´d say, play the training missions and when you hang of the gameplay, tune the realism up to 80-100%. I started with everything else on except the manual targeting.

I say start with 50 % on ur first 1 till 3 patrols just to know the features of ur sub and the gameplay

after that tune it up to 80 or sumthing...and maybe later on give it an 100 % try

I would start with weapons officer help turned on, so you can learn the other aspects of the game first. (This way you get to sink some stuff while learning too)

Have fun!

thats probably the best idea. try manual targeting but keep the weapon officers assistance on, so if you're not confortable making your own solution, he can if need be. but try first, only way you learn ;]

If you like real simulators, there's no real reason to have the options such as Realistic damage and finite fuel off.

My advise is to have manual targetting on, but weapon officer's assistance on as well. Turn every other realism setting on. You should be at 80-something percent realism.

Now practice setting up torpedo attacks and then have your Weapon Officer check them for you (have him do an ID, then a solution) and see how close your numbers were to his. It's a great way of training your TDC info gathering skills.

I went with NYGM full... but I got awful frustrated when I couldn't tell why my torpedoes missed (I knew they missed, but that was all).

So I switched external views on. After firing my torp's, I'd drop the 'scope and switch to the ext. view, and follow my torp's in. That way, I'd be able to see why I missed... too slow, too fast, dud, impact angle was too great, etc.

Went with that for a bit 'til I grew comfortable with my abilities, then stopped. I was extremely impressed a couple nights ago when I sank a tramp steamer in 14m/s winds simply by the seat of my pants... rough range estimate, guessed at the speed, from close range... and hit 'er amidships. I was ecstatic .

Workin' on it now i thought career mode was the only way to go until you guys told me. In the start, i went to video/sound options nd straight for career mode, completly ignoring the other options

I know the feeling, like god x2
I played SH1 many years back, and some days ago, i came to think about it. The feeling when i got a vital hit was ubercool..so basically, thats why im here now:p
I tried searching for SH1 on gamespot.com, nd found out there were 2 more! that made my day
I have my doubts to the next one though, i heard it would be american subs nd the same graphics engine...for me, thats called an expansion pack:hmm:
If EA did the same as Ubisoft, i figure we would have reached Battlefield 7 by now

The first day I started in SH3 I played on something like 20-30% to get a feel for the interface. The day after that I jumped up to 75% with only auto targeting and externals unchecked, and a few months after that I began playing at 100% which is where I am now. The key is to practice in the training missions as much as possible until you are comfortable with the game, after that go out and have a blast in the North Atlantic!
