Been doing a lot of research lately. Yesterday it was DNA extraction and analysis. Today is even more important research - Beer!
Today on the beer research - I am researching Porters. Since England is the place to find the best Porters, I figured lets compare some of those to their American counterparts. First is Red Hook Black Hook Porter. I give it about a 6 on a scale of 1 to 10 in the Porter department. The only reason I give it a 6 instead of a 5 is that its cheap about slightly more than $1 a bottle. Second Deschuttes smoked Porter. Though Red Hook beats Deschuttes Brewery on most beers, I give this one a slightly better flavor than the Black Hook Porter at 6.5 - .5 points for flavor, and 1 point for being cheap! My third beer (What I am drinking right now) is Flag Porter imported from England. As always, this is probably one of the best Porters ever made, but any older Alc is always better right? This one has nearly 200 year old yeast. Even though it is perfect in flavor, it gets half a point deducted because of its high price at $3 a bottle, and it gets another .2 points deducted for only having 11 ounces instead of a full 12. Current rating - 9.3 My last comparrison tonight might be some stiff competition to the Flag Porter - St. Peters Old Style Porter, also imported from England. It is also $3 a bottle, but makes up for it in the fact that there is 1 pt, 9 oz worth of product, and has a cool looking bottle, so no points added or deducted for for price here. Final score will have to wait about 1 hour though since I must fully take in this Flag Porter first! ![]() -S |

Final analysis - 7 points to the St. Peters Old Style Porter - mainly for being different than the mainstram American beers. It is more entertaining to drink than the Deschuttes, but not anywhere as refined as the Flag Porter. It has an almost harsh flavor to it but I may have defintely upset my taste buds by doing the Flag Porter first making the St. Peters taste harsher than it really is. It is also lacking an almost sweat after taste as found on any high point type beer. Anyway, its drinkable.

Scratch my previous quote. I am moving this St Peters Old Style Porter up to an 8. It tastes better now that the Flag is out of the way. Everything tastes bad after drinking a Flag Porter - It leaves other beers tasting harsh and no where as good.
