$49 Seagate 120 GB near silent 3.5" HD

This is a pretty good deal on the second in line to the quiet crown. Actually it is third - the Seagate Barracuda IV 40 GB is the quitest drive I know for 3.5". Second in line to that is the Samsung 120 and 160 GB drives, but the Samsung 160 GB is actually a toss up between that drive and this 120 GB Seagate, but I think the Seagate has the edge performance wise.

I run a couple of these Seagates right now and if you can mount them with rubber gromets, they make virtually no noise. However, if you allow the transfer to the vibration to your case, they are still relatively quiet and are a lot quieter than other drives of similar type.

I'll quit rambling on about them - they are fast, they are quiet, and now they are inexpensive, so what else do you want???

PS. Two of these on RAID 0 is how I sustained those 90 MB/sec + speeds on Sisoft Sandra.

noise is not what makes a big diffrence.
you might have a very quiet hdd, but then your psu cooling fan is still very noisy, so why bother?
all what matters for a hdd is it's speed and life time.

At least this is my point of view, tho

You bought the wrong PSU then. Check out Seasonic - nearly silent with one large 120 mm low RPM fan. I moved up to a noisier PSU now due to the need for more power, but it is still quieter than PSU's of similar size. The Seasonic you could almost never hear.

Here is the current rev of the Tornado series. They are extremely efficient (greater than 80%) which means less waste heat is generated which means that less fan is needed to cool it. Couple this to the low RPM fan, and these things will be silent. My system however has become so power hungry, 30 Amps on the 12 volt rails will not do what I want it to do in the future (even though it will work for right now), so I can't use them, but I would in a heartbeat if I could!

PS. Some people will tell you to buy a fanless PSU - but this is a very bad idea. That heat is dumped right into your case leaving you to find a way to exhaust it yourself, which means more fans. The single 120 mm on the Seasonic also has the side effect of exhausting your CPU heat along with it, leaving you with less need for case fans.

LOL, yes i'm just having the standart fans.
But i can still sleep very well while the both machines do their work at night time.

maybe for my next power machine i will take this in mind as this will be my next workstation which shall do much more over night rendering.
