Agreed. Actually, it'd be nice to have an install guide not just for NYGM, either.

I'll think about a good way to put up a procedure like this

There is absolutely no reason to ever have to reinstall SH3. If you follow this simple rule.

Install SH3, patch to 1.4

Now, here is the trick: Make a complete copy of the entire data folder and save it in a outside folder called 1.4stock.

Now install Grewwolves. Once installed and stable, copy the entire data folder and put it into an outside folder called Greywolves.

Now that GW is copied, delete the entire GW data folder in the SH3 folder and copy the original stock folder cack into the game.

Now add NYGM T2.0. Once it is stable copy the entire data folder and save it outside the game and call it NYGM.

You now have three installs of SH3 in one. If you mod any one while it is in the game and it screws up, delete it and copy the entire data folder back into the game folder.

And, if you decide you want two different type games (or 10 for that matter) just mod up the install, copy that to an outside the game folder and call it yo mama, we don't care but reinstall, that just does not need to be done.

They do share the same my documents folder for your cfg and crew and careers so make sure you know which career is which.

Never ever ever reinstall again

I'm like Wulfmann but with one change.

I installed SH3 once, patched to 1.4b, made a few "other changes" and created what I would consider a generic base. I copied that x times, renaming the resulting "Copy of SilentHunterIII" folders to something like "SilentHunterIII-Grey Wolves" or whatever. I then applied the appropriate mods to each copy, leaving one copy untouched.

As I use SH3Cmdr, I then created a few shortcuts to SH3Cmdr.exe pointing to each different installation (using the /l switch), again using shortcut names reflective of the installation I want to run. So, if I want to play Grey Wolves, I just run the "SH3Cmdr-TGW" shortcut. If I want RUb, I run the "SH3Cmdr-RUb" shortcut and so on.

If you don't use SH3Cmdr, you can achieve the same results by creating shortcuts to each different SH3.exe.

Absolutely effortless.

I did something similar. I was keeping a folder I called "Favorites" full of my favorite mods which I would have to reinstall any time I needed to redo the game. I finally figured it out: In my "Favorites" folder I now have two special files. One is titled "Data + 1.4", in case I need something from the original folder. The other is titled "Data-My Way". Every time I add something new to my game I either add it to the "My Way" file if I like it or chuck the whole Data folder and put the existing "My Way" back in.

I'll make a copy of my "+1.4", add NYGM 2.0 to that and put it in. If I like it I can keep it; if not, "My Way" goes back in.

Of course, being me, I'll probably go through every file in NYGM and mix-'n'-match like always.

Default installs

I have a question about multiple installs and SH3CMDR. If I have been playing a GW install for a while via CMDR and I decide to switch to another install via CMDR, say IUB 1.03 or NYGM tonnage mod, does the roll back in CMDR roll back all the separate installs?
confused

OK, this is where *some* users will find this tricky and/or confusing.

If you remember to always "resolve" SH3Cmdr/SH3 after exiting SH3 you won't have problems. That is, if you run "SH3Cmdr - GW", and after exiting SH3 run "SH3Cmdr - GW" again and do a manual rollback, you'll be right.

However, if you run "SH3Cmdr - GW", then exit SH3 and run "SH3Cmdr - NYGM" you will have problems as SH3Cmdr will rollback the GW based files into the NYGM version of SH3.

That's why this feature is not advertised in big letters - only players who understand the rollback concept will be able to use this method successfully. Fortunately, it's usually only the same players that understand how to create multiple copies of SH3 this "easy" way.

JScones,
Thanks for the reply. I thought this is how it worked, but I wasn't sure.
