I looked on the windows support centre and this is a known problem that was meant to be cured by sp1 .My computer is running sp2 so again I ask you for your help.

you can try unplugging it and removing the battery, I have had to do that a few times with my laptop when it has crashed hard.

I'd have introduced the laptop to Mr. Hammer long ago.

When this happens to me it's usually related to some programme that I closed earlier but is still hanging around in memory. 90% of the time it's Acrobat Reader, the other 10% it's usually Copernic Basic. I just end those tasks via the Task Manager and the system promptly closes down.

I mused the task manager to order the shutdown and just waited to see how long it would take. Two hours later I pressed the power button. It is being collected again!!! on Monday by the msanufacturer.

Hold the power button down for 4 to 6 seconds and it should hard power off. Run a chkdsk /f on the windows drive too to make sure there isn't any data corruption that is causing the log shutoffs.
